All wooden necks have dead spots... Rics too. Maybe you're only counting the really bad ones (the kind you should actually be concerned about because it might come through in a performance), but I have never played a bass where I couldn't find some sort of dead spot.

I don't count the less sustaining as a dead note, just the notes that fade too quickly...the one's that go bonk, and are followed by a sort of wolf note.

I've decided some folks have gas leaks or methane seepage in their homes.

If you can't change your own strings, take up a non-stringed instrument. Something that makes noise when you blow in it.

Then cut it and string it up as normal.

I just found that neat trick after too many years so that's how dumb I am.
Seat ball end allow string to relax so its not twisted. Go 4" minimum past post. Bend kink 90°.
Set in post start tightening again let ball end untwist and set in.
After tune up press firmly on string in front of saddle to establish a witness point.
Retune.
Snap string at 12th, retune.
Strings will ring out, last a long time and be consistent string to string.

Some of those you have to change the reed on lets make it even simpler how about the triangle or maracas
