Help with Westminster Jazz-style bass!
I found this bass on my local CL: http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/msg/4061328029.html
He's saying it was built in the mid-60's in Japan and the serial number is 009903. Like new condition. He found some site that has a write up of a similar bass that says it has a one-piece maple neck, bound rosewood fretboard, and 3 piece solid ash body. Haven't been by to look at it yet, but any thoughts? It seems like it would be kind of a cool one to snag. Is it worth checking out? What would you expect to pay for something like that? He's asking $500.

It looks like one of the millions of basses put out by the Matsumoku factory in the late '60s, early '70s. If it is, it's probably a decent playing bass. I'd offer him $50 for it. If the electronics are crap, you can still replace the pickups and wiring and have a decent bass for under $300. And it's not a collectors item by any means.

Sadly... that $2 in the title is a decoy. He wants $500.

He's insane. It was probably $25 when it was new. If you're flush with cash you could offer him $100, but I wouldn't go any higher. Westminster is like an SX/Jay Turser/Galveston bass today. Decent players but nothing special. Especially not $500 special.

That was my instinct. I know nothing about these 60s/70s/80s Japanese basses, and I wanted to make sure I wasn't passing on a sleeper, but it is seemed very odd to expect $500.

It probably is a nice bass. Looks to be in good condition, Probably sounds decent. A good, solid, workhorse of a bass. Just not at what he wants for it. It would be way overpriced at $250. If he really thinks he has a collectors item he's kidding himself. There are tons of the same bass out there with different names on the headstock.
