I've found pics online of neck pockets on plywood guitars and I'm relieved to see they are very different. Agreed these are too irregular to be either plywood or tool marks. It looks like a lam, but the layers are tilted - they're not parallel to the top and back. I've just never seen this type of grain before - probably because most of my guitars are black with painted cavities
Now I'm guessing the body is basswood mainly because it's super lightweight. But I've read basswood is supposed to cut cleanly, and this one got pretty tore up around the drill holes.
