HK 7-string Bass?

Hi Guys,

I'm normally a 5-string player, but recently a friend of mine has lent me this 'HK' 7-string bass to play with (he's actually selling it!) i don't know too much about 7-string basses.. This one has Kent Armstrong pickups installed in it, and to be honest the tone is quite versatile! and fairly growly on the lower strings.. can anyone tell me more information on it, if they have heard of this brand of bass before? although i'm pretty sure they are budget versions of 7-string basses as the price for sale is £450..

Here is a clip i recorded today of me noodling/finding my way around it!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PxwChciHJKo

Do you think i should buy it???

Thanks,

Bill :-)

Yup. You're the kind of player that is perfectly suited for that kind of bass.
Nicely done.

I never post in threads where some one is asking the question, should they buy a particular bass? but after checking out your youtube clip, you seem to be getting around on it pretty well(kind of like you're a natural for it).

The bass sounds nice and your playing is better than a lot of the youtube clips I've seen of players with a 7 or more string bass.

Should you buy it? What do you think of the overall quality? The tone?, is the weight comfortable for you? ANy neck dive?, etc.

Body shape reminds me of a Marleaux Consat. Go for it, dude. Seven strings seems to suit you. Some people just can't catch on.

Cheers for the posts guys, i just wish i knew more about the bass as i can hardly find any info through google, and they don't seem to have a website etc..

I personally do like it, nice tone, and the whole bass is really beautiful, shape and wood's used on it.. the video camera doesn't do the tone justice.. i'll carry on playing and will think about it and let you know if i end up biting the bullet on her! :-)

but if anyone has any personal info on the HK basses that would be great.

HK (aka HeKe) stands for Hermann Kempf, a Germany-based importer of instruments built to their specifications in China and elsewhere in the Far East. They do have a website (German only): http://www.guitar-bass-shop.de/

HK basses are made in Korea and seem to be largely the same as Santander, another EU import.

Both 7-string models on the site cost about €400.

Wow! Those are really nice basses! And $500 for a 7 string with super looks? That's quite the deal! Of course shipping over here from Europe would add to the cost but I paid about twice that for each of my 7 strings used! So I'd say if the thing sounds as good as it looks it's a deal!

Thanks for digging that out for me! I'm genuinely shocked at how little money they are letting these basses go for! :-)

You are a definite natural on that thing. You make me jealous.

Yeah, if you can afford it and you like it, pull the trigger. It fits you extremely well.

That is a sexy bass. Even at ~$800 new after shipping and customs, it looks like it's well worth the price.

Yeah man, the body is beautiful, like I said with the sound, the picture doesn't do that thing justice to how nice the woods are!

Here is a nice clear pic of the body!

I have a very similar 7 string HK - was great fun but just did nto get on with the width of the neck. 5 string all the way for me.

Quality was surprisingly good for a cheap custom and it did sound good.

Great playing - wish my left hand could look that smooth!
