How about sandpaper and cheese graters?

To each their own, but I still don't get the worn in "look"...the feel I understand, because you want something that plays smooth and has settled in. It's your bass, you have the right to do what you want to do with it.

I remember reading an article a few years ago. The subject of the article was well off, urban men in Texas that were spending a lot of money to look like working cowboys. There was one guy that bought a cowboy hat and sprayed WD40 around the headband to make it look like he worked and sweated in that hat. This guy couldn't understand why real cowboy types looked down on him.

Play it!!!!

I'm not a fan of shiny chrome and ultra glossy finishes- it reminds me of the mid-1900's automotive industry. What's less appealing to me is a butchered bass.
Do what you like, but please proceed with caution on your bass.

In the violin playing universe, many top-tier soloists, chamber and orchestral musicians will not consider purchasing an instrument if the finish appears to be untouched and pristine (many, not all). Contemporary violin makers who build for these artists are asked to antique them. It is more common than you may think. Some makers don't do this or don't like to, but that's a part of the art in the business. When my wife brought a newer Italian violin into a lesson for her teacher to evaluate, her teacher saw the shiny, bright finish and said "I know it may seem silly, but I can't take this one seriously.."

Here we are talking about relicing basses on the Internet, and someone's gotta come and start talking about stuff like fate? Absurd.

To the OP, buy a nitro finished bass and don't even attempt to relic a modern poly finish.

I'm waiting for the 2014 Chevy Road Worn Series complete with dents, scratches, rust, cracked windshields, loose bolts, bald tires and oil leaks.
List prices starting at $25,000.

At least the chances of someone stealing that car will be slim.

I've relic'd a guitar before...not very well, but it's since accumulated some legitimate wear. (Of course, it was mildly relic'd when new, so I didn't feel bad for beating the crap out of it)
When "new" (I got it used, but this is how they came from the factory)

Now:

I think it all depends on the instrument. I mean, if it's honest wear you're after, just play the crap out of it. If it's the relic finish you want, study legitimately worn finishes, play it while sweaty and leave the sweat on it, use sandpaper, and if all else, Testors Dullcote is a wonderful product.

I went through a semi-pyro phase when I would light the finish of certain lower-value instruments on fire... looked pretty cool... pretty punk raawwk. Here's a buddy's guitar who was recently inspired to take that approach after seeing my old Fernandes Vertigo

That thing looks awesome!

Look, if you could buy that car new - and it is mechanically sound, passes federal safety standards, and is under warranty, etc...and the look was just that - a look - I would buy one.

I would rock that car and look badass doing it! I could park within inches of other cars and not care! I could leave it unlocked on city streets and nobody would f with it! It would scare the crap out of slowpokes on the highway and get them to pull the f out of my way!

It has definate advantages.
