How do I achieve this tone?

I know he uses a Fender jazz, but his amplification and settings remain a mystery.
Also, since his band broke up,(the Smalls)he is now an acoustic guitar stumming country bumchin!....(Corb Lund.)

Any suggestions?
Please listen to this song if you will...

Thanx.

Sounds like a Jazz with '70s spacing, emphasis on the bridge pickup.

Put Rotosound Swingbass 66's on your bass and you should be close to that tone. Turn your bass controls up.

Go to their this website and listen to the sound sample for these and other strings.

A lot of that tone is in the fingers of the player ... you can't just dial in every sound ... some sounds you have to generate with your hands ... learn different techniques like picking, slapping, Entwistle and Geddy techniques ...

I went to Bass pro shop and to my surprise they didn't have a single bass guitar.

both pickups on, treble all the way, rotosounds. play between the pickups, should be pretty close. Try using a non ampeg amplifier if you're using an ampeg currently

Boosted bottom and high mids, perhaps a little treble boost. A J-bass favoring the bridge pickup slightly, will help get you there.

It sure sounds to me like the bass player is using a pick.

Sounds like a sizzly bridge pickup favored Jazz with Rotos playing fingerstyle close to the bridge. YMMV.

I'm pretty sure a lot of the smalls stuff was played with a pick. What a waste. The smalls were a great band but they never really got as much attention as I thought they should have.

info from corb.

hey there...it's corb. here's some info

62 reissue jazz bass, japanese. sunburst, you can likely see it in some of the youtube vids. this song is a tortex pick, likely green. often used a pick. old yamaha B100 bass amp with an 18" speaker if i recall correctly. but that tone you're hearing on the studio recording has a good dose of the direct line mixed in with the mic. probly loads actually. another thing i used to do which was kinda key was turning all the knobs full, but dialing back the neck pickup volume just a bit. for some reason that really makes the tone cut thru while maintaining a fairly full sound. the more cut you need, the more you roll back the neck knob, but never too much. our sound was really thick...super thick heavy marshall guitar, and i often played sort of counterpoint/counter melody, lines, not just pedalling, so for the melody to speak i used a little twangier tone. and i've always loved how jazz basses twang. never hurts to hassle the **** out of the engineer/producer to pump you in the mix a little, too...lol.
thanks for listening!
cheers, good luck.
