Few things - $$$$$ does not equate to a great bass. I could sell you a abass for 100k if you wanted but do you need it? Heck no.... first off, your "humble" bass is a good solid bass. Secondly, what will you use the bass for... My advise, if you want a good vintage bass - check out my columns in Premier Guitar. I did 2 different series.. See the year end review and find the best bets. I also did a great basses under 2000.00.... That should help. You need to figure out, what you need vs what you want. W/a 5k budget, you can get lotsa stuff, do you need 5k bass? I'd buy 2 or 3 lower price basses, fall in love with one and trade the other bass for a 2nd version of what you love...

I think ill end up getting two kinds of basses. I have been looking on a custom shop fender, but i also think ill buy a cheaper 5 string bass. I have never had the opportunity to play a 5 stringer for a longer period of time, and maybe ill fall in love with it and buy another one, as you said. But that's just an idea, havent got around to try the basses i have been looking at, so its not for sure
