How to get cheap or free gear?

I'm looking for a way to get cheap or free gear on good brands. Eg Fender, Ampeg, Ashdown?

Is their any conpetitions or places that are selling them cheap?thanks

Watch Craigslist and wait for some sucker that doesn't know what they have to sell it cheap/give it away. Barring that, save your folding money.

Craigslist as posted above, Spending many hours searching eBay on a regular basis and putting in lowball bids on gear that you like (sometimes nobody else bids), Watching on Amazon for deals there, regularly checking the Hot Deals section and classifieds on TB, and finally being willing to jump on a deal as soon as you see it because if you hesitate someone else will snap it up.

Bottom line there is no free ride, if you want cheap it will take some work on your part to find it. I've found a lot of great deals (most of my gear) but I can't count the number of hours I've spent searching for them.

???
Craigslist is a great place to look for used gear. Sometimes you luck up on people not knowing what they have or needing fast cash for something. However, there is no website where you can click to get a fender bass and ampeg stack for free. If there was, we would've ransacked it long ago. If you're looking for free gear, get a rich, generous friend.

From the dropdown menu, select bass. Enter the maximum dollar value you will spend. There are basses of pretty much any dollar value. However, you will basically get entry-level basses. You get what you pay for. Usually they will need work.

Try this,
1) Study hard in school then learn a skill that is in demand.
2) Get a good job and work hard.
3) Save your money and don't blow it on crap, live with in your means.
4) Walk into any music store and buy whatever you want with the money you earned and saved.

Craiglist, and eBay are great suggestions. For my area pawn shops are often a good resource. There is a bit of waiting for the price to drop. Which adds a bit of a chance that some one else may snatch it up, but if its not priced where you want it then walk away. There will be other deals. If it is priced right. Then talk him down lower as they are obviously desperate to sell at that point.
Much luck man, and if do walk away. Let me know .

In my experience, two things come to mind. Get to know everyone you can, and be the nicest, most genuine, and most generous guy around.

I've been the recipient of some really cool gear because of my relationships, and yes, one of those was a $100 Rickenbacker 4003.

That reminds me, I've been neglecting that upright for too long . . .

One "channel" comes to mind, but be then prepared for the aftershock of the very enthusiast "fan" who has had his eye on You the whole time asking You after the set: "why are You playing MY instrument/rig?".
Usually the fast, correct answer to avoid repercussions is very hard to find...

So, do as we all have done, search and wait.
The deals are there, You just have to find them.

Regards
Sam
