I know, I spent years and years trying to get away from this tone, so I know how to get it
Basically, this is a 4003 with both pickups on full (switch centered, regular output jack), lots of compression and a _really_ really strong plucking hand.
The key is lots of compression, turned up enough to give a hair bit of distortion. Then, whack the thing as hard as you can.

Im wondering if there is a video out there or something with Steve saying "I used a Rickenbacker to record the album Human"?
Just wondering how you know, that you need a Rickenbacker?

| | | Hey, Tool my bass. Check This site http://www.stevedigiorgio.com/equipment.html
About quiting the band. he recorded album and went for a tour with another band. He was pissed off on guys from death and a producer cause there is no bass in that mix. really if you listen to original version you wont be able to hear anything. But in 1993 he came back to record another album

If you cant afford a Ric and you have a strong back i would try a Peavey T40. They are famous for having Ric'ish tones. They are also built very well. ( At least the one i had was) Still kickin myself for selling it.
Good luck on your tone quest....

You also need to use a lot of compression, to the point where no dynamics are left. |

| | | | I would go for Sansamp if I had a decent bass. Im kinda tired of this agathis-guitar-looking like thing |

$10 - 2 cans of spray paint
priceless - playing with a crappy but unique looking bass. |

If you put geddy lee on an ibanez you could probably recognize him as geddy lee by his playing style but if you put me on his setup you would not think its geddy lee. The fact of the matter is a specific tone is a specific tone. A certain tone doesnt make a bassist who he his but if your after that bassist sound you most likely need the gear they have or you will not be satisfied
