This will not end well.
I voted 8, because that is my personal preference. I've got a 7, tuned B-C. Anything lower isn't fun (for me) to play because of the feel of the string, doesn't sound good (too me) because its so damn low and cabs are challenged by it; anything higher and we're talking about a string that is too narrow (for me) at normal bass scale lengths and too high (too me) to fit into my musical style, and because at 8 strings, it losses its practicality (for me) as a bass - too hard to just play regular lines at that point.
That said, Jean Bauldin and his 11s are my hero(s), and Jaco only needed 4, but I suck compared to Jaco, so the 7 really helps me out.
Why do people ask these questions?
Also, my 7 has a rosewood fretboard which increases string tension and eliminates deadspots.
