Hey! I am getting a 6 string bass that I would use for slapping mainly, but also many other styles.

I want to get this one but there are just so many amazing options!

Any advice on buying good quality 6 strings or suggestions? Thanks.

Ibanez are great instruments. The BTBs are especially wicked models. The link you've provided is a BTB676, sort of their entry model 6-string, which is fine. There is also a BTB776 and the recently announced BTB1406E, but each model up gets more expensive.

Buying used Ibanez are normally the best way to go. Buying new is fine, but while the instruments are very good quality, they generally do not retain high resale values. Good news for a buyer; not so good news for a seller.

If you like to slap, go play some 6 strings to figure out what spacing you like. I like 17mm string to string OK for everything, since it keeps the neck from getting any wider. But a lot of folks really like 19mm on a six string for slap-style.

these are great basses too

And +1 to looking for used, there always seems to be a handful of 6er's around. I think lots of ppl buy a six and don't get around to learing to play it as well as the 4-5 they are comfortable with and then get rid of them.

This is very similar to a bass I play! It is an amazing axe! Make an offer if you can scare up anything even close to the asking price.

I think the only Ibanez 6 string I've played is the SR1206E. It was nice with the Nordy pickups, but the string spacing was a little tight.

For less money than that BTB, you should be able to find a mint Peavey Cirrus 6. I paid WELL under $900 for mine. They are awesome, And Made in America - if that matters to you.

Yes, the Soundgear line are excellent as well. I always received compliments when I played my SR885.

I started with a Brice , and I'm still digging it.

I went with an Ibanez 6 string for my first bass and am very happy with it.

Yamaha TRB1006J

35" scale and three band active equalizer, as much as Ibanez BTBs
Yamaha Alnico soapbars work way better (power and brilliancy) than Bartolini mk2 on Ibanez
Finally (but then it's up to you for this) Yamaha is alder body and maple top and bolt on neck (more and more attack, especially for slap) with himass brass bridge. Ibanez is mahogany wings with maple neckthru body and monorail II single bridges (more sustain).

Cheers,
Wallace
