If you don't want to wreck the lock take it to a luggage repair place near you. They can get it open or replace the lock.

mine locks by turning it clockwise. have the opening lined up, gently, slowly turn counterclockwise and when the key is moving past the 4-5 oclock position leverage the key back and forth a little to see if it catches anything... if it does, keep turning.

the 'tumbler' seems to engage around 4-5 oclock and perhaps its a bit recessed and you just need to gently wiggle the key to get the tine on the key to make contact.

Is it possible to get replacement keys for the newer Fender SKB cases? Also for the Musician's Gear tweed Fender style case. Who should I contact?

I think you can just use a small flat head. I seem to remember them being fairly easy to open. My 3 year old did this to me once.

Who locks the case? Or more to the point, WHY?? It won't keep anyone from stealing it- they'll take the case too. It's easier and better to teach your kids to respect the boundaries than lock the case up. If you're shipping it, use gaff tape around the case (NOT duct tape- that's nasty useless stuff) covering the latches. Best thing you can do is throw the keys away as soon as you get the case.

And they're not very secure anyway, you can generally get them to open with a very small flat head screwdriver.

John

When my case did that to me (not musicman case), I was able to pull the tab to open it hard enough to bust the gear on the lock without breaking the actual closing mechanism.

If all else fails, just try pulling on it real hard. If it breaks, replace it. You'd have to anyways:P

I always do that with Yamaha Attitude Limited II hardcases: no problem whatsoever...

But it happened the very first (and one and only) time I closed Ibanez ATK1200 Prestige, the best MIJ StingRay "wannabe", right?
I tried to open it, gently first, with stock key (nothing) then roughly...
I happened to disallign the small key (very weak, compared to Yamaha's) yet, eventually opening the case, I just threw both keys away... And that's all

So... Try to open it in every position with your key, then forever forget'em (lock and keys)... They just don't deserve anymore attention.

Cheers,
Wallace

Why did you lock it in the first place ?
Nobody lock's a bass case. LOL
Oh. I know, so the robber will have a surprise when he breaks it open.
Best is not to lock it, you might get to keep the case as a consolation.
Sorry, i'm just being a smart a**.
If you the see the rivets, dremmel then off so you wont damage the case. Then re-install with new lock and rivets. Just an idea.
