I haven't seen a Mustang thread in a while

I got my CIJ about 6 or 7 weeks ago....and I love it. Fast, comfy neck. P-bassish tone. Simple, passive controls. Intonation is spot on.

Still love my MusicMaster, but when I play my Mustang I'm all like.....oh yeah, baby! That hit the spot!

Sooooo, what do you think about the Mustang bass? Love it? Hate it? Let's hear it.

I was hoping for the Squier version to come out, which it eventually did. I even wrote Fender a letter asking for it. However, the SS Jag came out first. I can understand one's preference for the Mustang, but the Jag works fine for me. I'm glad you like yours. Lots of people have made great music on Mustangs.

I like the Mustangs a lot. I have both a CIJ and the newer Squier.

Apart from the fact that the necks are very easy on the hands, I like the tone a lot. It's a peculiar thing - almost, but not quite a p-bass. I think this might have something to do w/the PU placement. (As a function of % of scale length, it's closer to the original SCPB placement than the modern p-bass placement, IIRC.)

There's something a bit off-beat about them that I like a lot.

It's fun to mess around on it. I put Nordstrand pickups in mine to beef it up a bit.

I'm thinking about putting Nords in mine, but honestly, it sounds pretty darn good the way it is.

It doesn't make a heck of a lot of difference.

I have a stock 1974, the second bass I owned, purchased in Berkeley, CA during my graduate school years. Looks quite well used now but still sounds good.

Love Mustangs! Use to collect them. Decided to pick a favorite and sell the rest. Precision and Jazz basses were getting all the recording dates however... Still love 'Stangs though!

Which ones were you collecting? Did you go for one of each? (i.e. competition/oval tuners/70s model w/the strat knobs?)

I've been curious to play the ash one they made in the 70s. I know there's a re-issue of it, but I think it is only for the japanese market.

And here I thought my ears were failing me.

But, now I can say its customized - an emotion that has a lot to do with the success of all Fender spec parts suppliers.

Seriously though, hearing differences depends a lot on strings and EQ preferences. I have LaBellas on mine and like an old school tone so any added high end at the pickup is not gonna hit my ears anyhow.

I took my Mustang to a drummer's house today and laid down some bass tracks for a home recording project. I was quite impressed with the sound, so was the drummer. It actually got a little too bassy on one track so he had to EQ it out. Not bad for a short scale.

I posted this earlier in the "Hardware" section, but figured I might have better luck here:

I'm a rookie DIY'er. I just found a nice, albeit weathered, 1974 Mustang in burst with a pearl pickguard. The plate was warped in several spots, so I removed it to reveal what the pics show.

I'm ordering a new pickguard (pearl? tort?) and screws, but should I clean this up at all? If so, how? Thanks in advance for any advice!

I just wet my pants. Beautiful!

I sure would like to find a body with front and rear contours to replace the slab body on my reissue. Warmoth does not make one. Anybody know where to find one for a reasonable price?

Thanks! Yes, he did a great job on the bass. His pickups are awesome too.

Talk to Ben Lindsey. madisonsmusicstore@yahoo.com He could make you a body in alder, or whatever. He's also a good painter/finisher too - he's great to work with - and he's very reasonable.
