I MUST sell one of my basses but don't know which one :(

I have three high end five strings basses and one must go away.
They are very different tonally and I equally love the three of them.
I have no idea how to choose, and any siggestion would be more than welcome since I keep on thinking and re-thinking.
Thanks

I can offer a way to narrow things down. What is the one that you absolutely would never sell, no matter what. Chances are you can pick one quickly. If so, you've narrowed your decision to two. From there, if you can immediately pick one you like better than the other, you know which one to sell. However, if you can't, try taking a piece of paper and drawing a line down the middle. Put the name of one on the left side and the other on the right side and start listing the positives and negatives of each one. The one with the more positives, gets to stay with you...and be sure to play each of those two. It could wind up being something as insignificant as one is easier to re-string than the other, or whatever.

...and, remember one important thing...failure to make a choice is NOT an option. That's the best advice I can offer. It has worked for me. Good luck!

bassgod0dmw 01-13-2013 08:41 AM

What are they and what do you play?

Mr_Music90 01-13-2013 08:46 AM

If you would say which brand they are, it'll be more helpfull to choose...

smcd 01-13-2013 09:35 AM

The best way to make a decision like this is to determine which of the 3 basses will be easiest to replace.

For example, say you have a Sadowsky, a Dingwall and an Alembic. The Sadowsky and Dingwall you bought in the last 5 years. The Alembic is a Series I that you bought at a low price from a friend 25 years ago. If you're like many people, you're never going to pay $19,000 to replace that Alembic, so that is the last bass you should sell.

I did not mention the brands because it would have been somehow influenced opinions here.
Anyway they are a Tobias Basic pre Gibson, a Furlanetto BN5 and a Modulus Q5.
I played lots of different styles from extreme metal to funk/R'n'B/Beatles cover band.

Considering the specs they are quite difficult to replace.
Tobias because is getting rarer and rarer.
The Q5 because of its color/electronics.
The Furlanetto for the specs too.

smcd 01-13-2013 10:43 AM

No question - the Modulus is the one to go. I don't know what color/electronics this has that makes it difficult to replace, but you see Q5's up for sale ALL the time, and often at nice prices. The others, not nearly as much.

scubaduba 01-13-2013 10:49 AM

If it were me, the Q5 without question. They can be found used all the time. The Tobias should be last to go. It would be the hardest to replace. And the F Basses just sound so good.

Sell the Modulus.

Man up and make a decision. :D

gjbassist 01-13-2013 11:57 AM

Modulus. It's the easiest to replace if you decide you want another one down the road.

klejst 01-13-2013 12:24 PM

I say the Modulus as well. I know it is hard, I have been forced due to reasons out of my control to sell gear in the past as well a couple times. If you still cannot make your mind up I would say a true way to do it is to draw out of a hat. Each bass has a good chance of staying as the next. Or if you are able to swing it perhaps sell it to a friend or someone you know where you know they will take care of it and possibly give you the option to buy it back later down the road. Only if that can work in your situation of course.

Smallmouth_Bass 01-13-2013 12:26 PM

If those we my basses, I'd say the Modulus as well.

sevdog 01-13-2013 12:33 PM

Are you currently in a band? Which one do you use with the group? Then which one is the best backup for the group?

JacobWhaler 01-13-2013 01:14 PM

Id get rid of the mod too.

Strat Hater 01-13-2013 01:25 PM

None of my business but do you just need money? If so do you own something else that you could sell instead?

Just asking!

'Nuff said

It's funny how people think the same on here. When it comes to a "Sophie's Choice" situation for me, the weakest link is always the one that's easiest to replace if I have sellers remorse.

In the past, I've sold off stuff that wasn't working for me at the time... and I continue to kick myself over those decisions to this day. Now, I have to think really hard about what can go if push comes to shove.

And to Strat Hater's point... what else could go?
Stuff like amps and cabs, effects, TVs, clothes, shoes, etc... That's a lot easier to find than the basses you have.

Of what you mentioned, the Modulus would be easiest to find (though not sure about being in Italy). That would be my axe victim, if I were you.

Immigrant 01-13-2013 09:49 PM

Sell the Modulus because a bunch of anonymous guys on the Internet said so. Do it tomorrow.

:hiding:

Sorry times are tough and stuff must go. I empathize completely even though the first part of this post makes me sound like a heartless doodoo head.
