I need to vent to my fellow bass players..... Hello all, So, moments ago I received the latest issue of the Musician's Friend catalog. The entire bass guitar section spans two pages, page 18 and 19. There are four Fender basses, two Squires, one Gibson, one Ric, one low end Hofner, one low end ESP, two neon colored Deans, one five string Jackson, and a low level Schecter. It is pathetic. The Guitar Center catalog isn't any better. Why do we always get shafted? Drummers and guitar players get all the porn and we get garbage! We need to unite! Viva la Revolution! In the summer of 2001 Musician's Friend put out a bass player edition. It was chuck full of all sorts of basses and bass gear, plus a sample of the Fender Bass Street magazine. I still have it. I saved it for reference purposes. But back to my topic, are you all as sick of this as I am? I am interested in your thoughts and opinions. |
The catalogs are usually pathetic. Online is the way to shop these retailers. |
I don't care. I don't shop at either. |
That recording section looks nice as always and guitar players must spend more? |

Because most kiddies want to be the next person in the spotlight and bassists traditionally aren't that person. That is why I play bass. I like to drive the train, not control the lights. |
Why are you using the internet to complain about the deterioration of snail mail catalog services. Try writing a letter to someone who cares! ;) |
Supply and Demand. Not a big demand = low supply Truth be told, I would venture to guess, they sale one bass for every 20 guitars. That equals 1/20th the space in catalog. |
I really don't order from either . I like getting the catalogs though. I like looking at them.... the same way I enjoy dirty magazines (don't judge me!). They are especially great for long drives and my most common use... toilet entertainment. I'm just tired of the bass section being as crappy as it is. I would love another bass issue like the one I have from 2001! |
I use them to burn in my fire pit. That gloosy laquered stock burns hot and bright...for a second. |
...it's pretty much always been that way plus retailers follow the money trail (guitars and probably drums)...considering there are and have been so many incredible bassists over the last 50 years and that things are still the way you described I wouldn't expect it to ever really change. |

I'm in my 60's. When I was a boy one of the highlights of the year was getting the new Sears and Penney's Christmas catalogs. Everything good in the world came to us through catalogs. Even I don't miss them, I just take my Android to the bathroom.... Ken |

If I recall the last Guitar Center catalog I got in the mail did not have 1 page dedicated to bass, or even 1 bass in the entire thing. Perhaps they are trying to tell us we no longer need to buy gear. |
Ignore it and check out sites like Bass Central. |
