I reliced a bass

Yes .. I reliced a bass ... Usually I am against that, but in this case it made sense.

Back in 1972 I had a Gibson EB0. I liked the look and feel of the bass but I was not a big fan of the tone. So I got a few Epiphone EB0 bass bodies and I have built 2 frankensteined 5 string SG basses. This one here had a nice new body that had a some deep screatches. Also by relicing this bass it is sort of like I still have the old one I used to have back in 72.

The finish on the Epiphone SG basses is really thick. It really tacks some effort to relic them and get down to the wood.

I went to Bass pro shop and to my surprise they didn't have a single bass guitar.

I like! Very understated. A lot of relics look like someone gave them an acid bath or put the guitar through a wood chipper. Yours is very natural. Definitely a fan!

Actually with the straplok extender it balances nicely.

Thanks ...

I would not relic a $1500 Fender but I got the Epi body for $20 on ebay, with all of the parts incluede total investment around $300.

I am indifferent towards the relicing, however that is a great machine there!

I would play the heck out of it.

My first bass was exactly like this:

I was a skinny punk kid, and I loaned it to a guy in a band I left, due to being too shy to be lead singer. They decided it was "a piece of crap," because a wire had come off a pot, and so it didn't work very well, and they decided to "go Pete Townshend on it," and all I got back was a piece of the headstock.

I should have killed them, but when I was seventeen, that just wasn't me.

I love the SG style Gibsons, and should probably get another one someday. Before the seventies were over, I gave up bass playing until about three years ago.

I always thought the SB-100 was a shortscale, but it wasn't! It was a long scale. I also had a Rickenbacker fireglo 4001 for a while back then, too.

I wish I still had both of them!

On edit: I realize I had the SB-300, which was, in fact, a shortscale. I knew there was a reason that Rickenbacker seemed so huge to my 17 year old hands!

Nice job!! Did you go with 34" scale? I like the toaster in the neck position too.

I like it, but the J knobs on a Gibson body look *weird*. Were they just the knobs you had on hand, or was it something you planned to confuse the viewer?

Love it, usually relics come out looking like someone unloaded acetone on the body but this looks beautiful! Nice work!

I believe he makes the straplock extenders in his own shop.
I've played quite a few of Jeff's basses, and they sound & play even better than they look.

Yes 34" ... it works better than 30" with a B

That is actually a modified high gain and not a toaster.

They are actually older style Rickenbacker knobs ... they were there in my shop so I used them.
