The "I WOULD NEVER SELL THAT BASS"...and end up selling it CLUB

Yes...

as title says.
I think that there are lots of us out there who have bought a bass and said to themselves "It's surely a keeper... I would never sell it!" ... and then end up selling it.

Share the pics, write your stories... I think we would all have a laugh or just share a story that would make us cry.

Here's mine:

Some years ago I've scored a great all original Fender Jazz bass 1974. Actually I bought it from a typical guy who "does not know what he has..." and bought it for a cheap price.
Well... I've said to myself how fortunate I am to have an all true original Jazz bass ... I will keep it for life.
Sadly some health problems that occurred to my mother forced me to sell it only a year later (the cures were very expensive). My mom's ok now
Well I really don't regret selling it for a good cause but sometimes when I see the picture of it I really miss that bass and end up as one of the "I would never sell that bass" and end up selling it.

Can't produce pics but holy crap there's been a ton of " I'll never sell this" basses. Several Alembics and several vintage Fender Jazz basses along with some really nice Spectors and a 1969 Fender Mustang in competition blue with matching headstock.
I've been slowly buying up basses that I had and sold again thanks to a well paying career and a sluggish bass market in my area.

crap. I remember selling my 1977 Rick 4001 for $325 & my '73 Fender P for about $300. This was in the mid-80's.

stupid me, they weren't "hair metal" enough.

Haven't ever been attached to a bass yet. Guess that could be lucky?

The worst for me was a '76 Rickenbacker 4001 mapleglo (Lemmy!); I also had a 70's franken jazz: fender jazz body w/ a 70's fender p neck; great bass...

Heh, just find one of those "show the gear you're never selling" threads. IME, you get a pretty good hit rate from those.

Here's one for you...

I had a Musicman Cutlass II which I loved and thought I'd never part with, but eventually sold it in favor of a Warwick Fortress One 5er. That was many years ago...fast forward to 2011 and alas! I came across a posting describing a similar bass. Low and behold, it was my bass after all! The same guy I sold it to still owns it.

I would love to get it back but I couldn't afford to make an offer at the time and the current owner was not interested in selling at the time anyway. I asked him to contact me if he ever wishes to sell.

Here's the thread where I found the bass which I sold years before I ever heard of TalkBass:

1. Modulus VJ4 versus Warmoth/Status?

2. Modulus VJ4 versus Warmoth/Status?

3. Modulus VJ4 versus Warmoth/Status?

Dude, I should get 30+ membership #'s.

I have said "I am never selling this bass" more than I have said "ok... just ONE more beer".

I have a 66 jazz i bought in the early '80's I never play it because it is heavy and I really like 5 strings. I haven't sold it yet but there really is no point in me keeping it except I may regret selling it....... Makes no sense really..

And yes the photo is to give you all a chuckle shot in the mid '80's

I had a 1968 4001 from 1973 to 2005. I thought I would never get rid of it. ... But ... I found I liked newer Rics better ... So I played my 1973. Also I converted from playing 4 string basses to 5 string basses so the 68 became obsolete. Then someonge offered me $6800 for a bass that I bought for $150 and suddenly it became expendable.

I went to Bass pro shop and to my surprise they didn't have a single bass guitar.

My wife and I were in the construction trade until 2008 when everything went south here in CA. So to keep making the house payments I sold my babys.

1962 slab board P with OHSC and strap in Sunburst
1968 Jazz black with matching headstock
Travis Bean Koa
1968 Tele bass paisley
I was sure they would all still be here when I went to my grave.
Things change...

There have been a number of basses that I've had that happen to. The reason I end up selling them is that I'll love them at home, but as soon as I get them on a gig they simply can't cut through a mix well enough. Because of that, I always find myself going back to my EBMM StingRays. They play well, have a classic enough look, and I never have any issues being heard when I'm playing one.
