Ibanez 5-String Hollowbody

Just saw this on Musician's Friend. All I can say is instant GAS. Sure, the string spacing looks pretty narrow (I'd guess 16mm or 15mm), but the idea of this bass is very cool to me. :hyper:

Not sure why it's called the AFB205 when it looks more like the AGB200; AGB205 might make more sense. Nothing about it on Ibanez website yet, which I find odd. must be a NAMM thing.

Would you rock one??

NicJimBass 01-24-2013 08:08 AM

I would absolutely rock one. I've always lusted after a Lakland Hollowbody, but as a 5-string player, it never made sense to pursue one. This is cool.

OOOOOH!!!!! Finally somebody thought it the right way!!!!!

:)

Wow man that looks pretty cool. I wonder how the low B sounds.

+1,000. Holy crud. I am really really really close to unbelting for this thing NOW.

(But the neck dive factor scares me)

Wow, that’s definitely a bass I’d be interested in. Looking forward to hearing some review and sound clips.

Hmmm cool beans. I'm guessing that's gotta be a long scale, right?

I would assume so. Ibanez has the Mikro 28" 5er, so I might guess that this would be 32", if not 34". If it were 30", I think I might stay away. But, I really like the idea of having hollowbody sound with 5-string practicality.

It looks like a short scale to me, and considering that Ibanez moved from long to short on the artcore basses a few years ago, I would be surprised if they only made this new fiver into a long scale bass. Unless either the AFB or AGB models are getting lengthened again as well.

CaballoViejo 01-24-2013 06:37 PM

Going by the large distance from tailpiece to B string tuner post, I'd say it might be possible to fit 34" scale strings to this baby, which is going to greatly reduce one of the biggest problems with short scale basses - the lack of suitable strings.

Looks great, but very odd there is no description or details on any music store websites which have this listed for sale.

Mikio 01-24-2013 09:35 PM

I almost buy the 4 string version years ago, but the quality was too bad =/ I doubt this will be different

sevdog 01-25-2013 12:17 PM

Dammit. And just when my GAS had subsided.

I have the solid body artcore short scale bass and it's really sweet. The hollowbodies are really nice and I've just never gotten around to picking one up. The 5er makes it almost a NEED to buy.

would you please elaborate that?

Whoa, 15mm spacing and a 30.3" scale...maybe I need to play one before I buy, I suppose it could work if it's done right.

jlepre 01-25-2013 02:42 PM

damn! Short scale.

Does your solid body Artcore have the plastic tuner knobs? Going by my experience with an AFB200, they can be broken way too easily.

The wood felt too week, like it'd break (both body and neck), same for the hardware (safe for the bridge perhaps). The pickups aren't too good, kind of weak and don't really have much versatility, really hard to get different sounds, even when soloing the pickups. The knobs felt cheap too, the whole bass feels cheap, that's the thing

DeMayunn 01-25-2013 04:43 PM

I guess they call it the AFB because its an Awesome F-Bomb.

'Cuz it has F-Holes geddit? :hiding:
