If you have only one bass : why?

I'm now in the 'only one bass' club...

For now I'm in the 'I don't want to waste my time thinking about different basses ATM - I just want to play' category.

You?

I too am in the one bass only club - yeah I've had other basses but nothing sounded or played as good as my current bass - Lado Solo.

I'm in the process of building a custom bass - but this custom bass will have a lot of the same features that are on my current bass - same wood - custom wound pickups etc. So I will have two basses - but two of the same

Does that still count?

I don't have the money to buy new equipment all the time, hell I'm lucky to buy strings when I need them. There's also the fact that my band doesn't really do much anymore and as much as I love the bass and playing, just playing around my house for myself has been a real drain on my motivation/creativity

I guess I could also fall into the "I can't play two at a time, why have more than one?" thing as well, I've only owned more than one bass one time and it wasn't very long until I decided to sell the second one. I do my best to find a bass that I can use for any situation that I'd find myself in with as little change on my part as possible. I.E. simply changing what pickup(s) I'm using to go from, say, punk to jazz or whatever

I've owned/tried a bunch of basses over the years and have discovered that an active, 4-string, light weight, J-pup bass with nice hardware suits me best.

I now own a Peavey Millennium Plus J/J:

Active J-pups
Active 18v 3-band preamp with sweepable mids
Alder body with 1/4" flamed maple top
Quartersawn maple neck with figured Pau Ferro fretboard
Hipshot light bridge and tuners
Tusq nut
Graphite rods in neck
8.3 lbs

I think I'm pretty set as far as J type basses goes.

At this point I'm not sure I could justify buying another bass because I can cop a lot of tones on this with the sweepable mids. I only play at church at this point, so I don't need the different specific tones that a studio player would need.

I'm probably going to be getting a second at some point soon. I technically have two, but one doesn't work and is being rebuilt to give to my brother. I've had many basses over the years, but I tend to give instruments to friends a lot. I have a lot of friends like that as well, so instruments just sort of float around the circles that we're in. I've given away an Ibanez Sr405, Ibanez Sr400, SX P-Bass with a VM fretless neck, Squire VM jazz bass with a fretted P-bass neck, Lotus guitar, BC-Rich NJ Assassin, Jasmine by Takamine D35 acoustic, Oscar Schmidt acoustic, Fender DG-7 acoustic, Fender MIM strat, Fender MIM tele, Buescher/Malerne alto saxophone, King Trumpet, several amps and a variety of other instruments. I've been given an SX Jazz bass, Fender MIM strat, Gibson Les Paul Studio Lite, all but one or two of the instruments listed above, several amplifiers, speakers and mixers, a 24 channel, 100 ft audio snake, two alto saxophones and one trumpet and a variety of other things. I'll probably keep the SX Jazz bass and the Gibson Les Paul because the SX was the first bass that really felt and sounded like the right bass for me and the Gibson was given to me by my parents and means a lot to me.

I might buy a telecaster sometime soon, or a P-bass to put jazz pickups in.

I have been through so many different basses, but my CallowHill covers every single tone I might need. It has Nordstrand Big Splits, with one of the first Nordstrand pre-amps........that pre-amp is flat out THE BEST on the market. The only other basses I might need in the future would be a fretless and an upright.
I have also found "MY TONE" in a Baer ML112 and Mesa Walkabout.........been through a ton of those, but I am TOTALLY satisfied and that's a rarety.

Actually, George Fullerton and Bill Johnson got them right the first time. Leo was the one that screwed them up!

I quit playing for 20 years or so. Currently I only own one 2008 MIA P bass but will be buying a fretless of some kind this year.

I'm a total Fender guy, I'm in love with my Precision Bass. I will probably, however, add a Jazz Bass to my arsenal at some point in my career, and perhaps a fretless Jazz Bass as well. But as far as I'm concerned, you can't beat the Fender tone.

When I had only one bass, it was because it was all I could afford, and it got the job done well enough.

Have since acquired 4 basses, and each does what the original did not.

I am content.

I'm not in this club, but my choice would be a Fender Standard Precision V.

I think it’s wise (if gigging) to have at least a cheap backup, though.
