The newer ones are great...mine is an 09 and the neck is nice and thin. I had an 88 that was thick and had no taper. The old 4001's had thinner necks too.

I had a 2010 JG with a really HUGE neck! 2011 FG with a slimmer neck... My '87 "Bozo-Glo" had the thinnest neck so far...

Just goes to show, you never know until you have it in hand to "test."

Good luck with your search!!

All Ricks from 1959 to the present are the same 1-5/8" plus. No 1-1/2" wide ones...

Wow. That is all you need...well, All I would need! Nice set.

LOVE the Jazz. Debating whether to get the new Fender Version. Had it in 76.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the kind response. That Jazz is actually a 76 that weighs nine pounds and has a nice straight neck; it's my favorite bass. I'm sure the new 74 Fenders are going to be major cool, though!

Actually, I got the Ric out of the closet tonight because I haven't played it in a while. It has a pretty chunky neck (front to back), which I really like -- nice and stable!

OP, don't be scared of the neck, you will get used to anything if you give it a bit of time.

My hands are the size of a child's and I prefer necks larger than a Jazz profile.

Small hands does not equal necessity for a small neck.

Wow! As much as I love all the new fangled, high tech, fancy pants boutique basses that I've seen and owned, your stable is just about as good as it gets! Well played, sir!

Indeed. Although I do find that certain necks do work better with my hands. No bigger than 1 3/4, flatter radius, and a C shape is best for me.

My Ric isn't ideal, but it plays really well and I haven't had any issues.

When you say small neck, do you mean nut width, neck profile?

If you really like a Jazz, you might not like a Ric neck. The newer ones are pretty fat and a little bit wide. I had a 92' Ric that had a very nice thin neck. It definitely didn't seem like it was the claimed 1 5/8's. It was a beautiful neck.

That's the thing with Ric's. They are the same width up and down the fretboard and the most recent ones (I have a 2012) is pretty fat. If I were you, I'd seek out somewhere that has some in stock and go and try one. Lots of people don't like them. I really like playing them.
