Iron Butterfly bassist died today

Lee Dorman, bassist for proto-metal rockers Iron Butterfly, died today at his home in Orange County, Calif.. He was 70.

The county coroner's office tells E! News that Dorman, who had a history of heart trouble, was found in his car at around 9 a.m., dead of what appeared to be natural causes.

I started playing bass in the early 70's. The bass line for In-a-Gadda-da-Vida was an early must bass line in those days.

RIP Lee

Very sad indeed. I walked a few miles through the snow on Long Island to buy Inna-Gadda-Da-Vida as a youngster. I believe you meant "bassist" not basses.

Damn. In-a-Gadda was one of the coolest riffs ever, just one of those instant hooks that etched its place in musical history. Of course there is a lllllot more to Iron Butterfly than that, but that's what pops into mind when you mention Iron Butterly. Even the late, great Peter Steele / Type O Negative stole the riff for a medley break in the song Too Late:Frozen in live settings. That riff always got a thumbs-up reaction from the crowd.

If there were a heaven, it'd be cool to think he and Peter are up there working out some tunes. And looking for Dimebag to help out, too.

His early bandmate Darryl DeLoach was my former executive assistant's brother. He quit the band before they cut In A Gadda Da Vida.

Funny, I thought that he was found dead in his car in Monterrey after being missing 5 years ago. I just looked it up online and the story exactly matched what I had heard years ago. I know he was also involved in the space/military industrial industry.

Nope, I've got the SVT that belonged to Doug Ingle, the organist.

No, you are thinking of (Phil)Taylor Kramer, the bassist for many years in the mid-1970's. He and Ron Bushy (drummer) shared their Northridge, CA studio with my band at the time (Blazze). They got hold of Rocket Richot as a guitarist, played the strip under the name "Gold" for a while. Phil was a very nice guy. He disappeared many years later and was found in his car skeletonized at the bottom of a canyon near Malibu around 1995 or 96. Bummer.

In my opinion ... his best playing was the Metamorphosis album ... others may disagree, but lets agree to disagree,

Maybe the loudest bad I ever saw at Hampton Beach Casino on the NH seacoast. So loud that even though I went into the gig tripping my brains out on acid, I was straight when I exited the gig. Sensory overload or something. I caught them again years later at a small club that held 70 people. Definitely responsible for one of the most iconic bass lines of the '60s, with a nice muted flats tone. RIP, brother.
