J bass decisions

Hey there,
Recently i have come to find that i love the looks, sound, and playability of fender, lakland, sadowsky style basses.

So i went into my local music store the other day and got handed a Lakland DJ-5 by one of the guys behind the counter, all because i picked up a fender J bass. It felt amazing so i started doing some research when i got home and realized that it was 35" scale. Normally i can't play 35" scale basses but this one for some reason felt fine.

I'm currently stuck between a Fender American Deluxe 5 and the Lakland DJ-5. I know fender recieve lots of endless praise, but for what im going to be using it for (first 4 years of music school) which bass would be best? also my budget permits that i can spend extra 600 on a fender but is it really worth it?

Thanks

Apples and oranges. The Lakland is passive while the FADJ5 is active/passive. Strictly passive mode I think the Lakland wins, but it depends if you want the versatility of active electronics or the classic passive tone. Although the Lakland is an aggressive passive tone.

You could add an Audure or a Jretro in the Lakland and it would give you the the electronics of the deluxe. I own a DJ4 with a Jretro and it's a great bass. I also own a Sadowsky Metro RV4 an it sets up and plays better than any bass I've played. If I were looking for an instrument for 4 years of school, I would be looking for a used Metro 5 for about the same price as a new Fender deluxe.
