Jazz Bass Build

Hi, this is my first post here....

I've read several post's here and had a question about building/modifying a jazz bass. I currently have a mim fender fretless jazz bass. I'm looking for a fretted jazz bass. I have about $350 to spend and would be using it for recording purposes. I know that's not a lot, but I was wondering if modifying a squier or sx bass with some new pickups would get me a good sounding jazz bass for recording purposes. I'd be recording a direct signal.

The type of music that I record is in the classic rock genre if that helps for the sound I'm going for.

Thanks for any help here.

There are several threads where peeps have modded their Squiers and SX's. Many have had good to great results. Also, check YouTube for bassists showing off their mods by looking for references to this-or-that pickup or electronics.

There's also been a thread or two for something called a Tonestyler. It's some kind of potentiometer do-hickey. I'm no whiz when it comes to electronics, but the demos I've seen are making me seriously consider one for a parts-bass build project I'm doing.

I felt a great disturbance in Las Vegas…as if thousands of Elvis impersonators cried out and then suddenly left the building.
