Jazz Bass Sound

I've been playing P-basses for the last year, and I'm very familiar with that tone, from the vintage stuff on to the more modern driven P tones.

I just bought a Jazz clone so I have that tone available with my new band.

What are some good examples of Jazz basses in rock music?

Rush and some Rage Against the Machine for starters. Although, both artists use other basses as well, so you'd have to research which songs are using Jazz basses.

The first couple Led Zeppelin albums and concerts from their first few years. Nicely recorded Jazz with flats rock sound.

Jazzes range from Jaco Pastorius (fretless and fretted) to Marcus Miller and Geddy Lee - that's hell of a range of sounds.

Was Zep II recorded with a jazz? That album is a BASS CLINIC. (Brief hijack, does anyone have info about what albums/songs JPJ recorded with what basses?)

I can't think of a better jazz bass in rock sound than JPJ.

Good example. Love early Alice Cooper.

I'm not a noob. But only in the last few years have I taken the time to turn down and really focus on tone.

I've really gotten some great P tones with my current setup, just trying to add the other side of the spectrum (yeah, musicman tones are probably next).

Once you turn down the volume and focus on creating a good sound, music really becomes fun.

Great info here. I typically associate the JB with R&B--just heard Verdine White of Earth, Wind & Fire on satellite radio this morning--yet clearly the Jazz has made its mark in rock.

Bryan Kienlen of the Bouncing Souls uses a Jazz Bass IIRC. Skip to 1:05 for a bass "solo".

First three records, to my ears, sound like almost all his Jazz Bass with flats or maybe rounds on a couple tracks.

A lot of Skynyrd was recorded with a Jazz.
Steve Fossen often used a Jazz in Heart.
