I am pretty sure that the direction should be counter clockwise to tighten. Typically on tuners on the top of the heasdtock you turn CCW to tighten. | I've had basses that wrap different ways on the different tuners and usually it's quite obvious which way is right because the string lines up directly with the slot on the nut in one of the directions. On these Kramer's, which I am new to, most people seem to tighten all in the CCW direction (at least that's what the pictures show, like the ones in amimbari's post), and other than for the E string, that puts the string on the side of the tuner that is furthest from the slot in the nut that each string goes to. It seems odd/wrong, but like I said I'm new to these things. My luthier's logic was that when they are wrapped so all tighern in the CW direction, the E sting is pulling on the nut in one direction and the others are pulling slightly in the other direction, splitting the directions of the forces on the nut. I read somewhere (in my searches for info on the Forum basses) about a guy that had trouble with his nut moving on a Forum bass whenever he tightened the strings tuning it, and I wanted to avoid that if at all possible. Maybe that's not a common problem. Thanks for the replies!

the prev. owner did it that way because he felt the same way ( as straight as possible thru the nut )
it was a pain to remember which way the tuners would turn so it got switched when I changed the strings. |

So, what I initially thought was I would wrap like you have shown for E, D and G, and with the A string going the other way. I'm going to defer to the luther on this one as far as how mine is set up. Anyone know how they were strung new from the factory? Are there original brochures out there anywhere that might show how they were done?

The strings for these Kramers should all go under the peg, and wrap CCW. In this case its meant to spread out a little to look cool. It doesn't matter from a playing standpoint, but you typically string so its CCW to tighten. So, if that is "under" for this bass, then all should go under.
The only bass that I own where that is different is my Kubicki Key Factor4, where the E and G strings still tune up CCW, but the posts and gears are set for the strings to have a straight pull to all four pegs, E and G wrap from the outside in, and A and D from the inside out.
I keep forgeting this was the '80s.

I wasn't about to send him a m.o. with zero feedback.

Shame there are literally no old Kramers in the UK, and if there are, no chance they'll ever be for sale. Oh well. I have a Disciple, got it last year I think, wicked tone for the price, not to mention the features (EMG MMCS, BTS, massive bridge, mahogany body, maple/ebony neck/fretboard). The asymmetrical neck (clearly taken from Tobias, as well as the body design) is a wonder to play.
Don't ask me about my expression, I don't understand it either! |

I need an upgraded amp first though, high power, low price... Fairly hard going with no secondhand market in the area! | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
