What I find interesting is that I'm playing a new 01' which is my second ever owning. I loved the first one (all stock Cherrybusrt with a Rosewood FB) but the passive tone would take a severe dive in volume. My new Trans Blue with Maple neck sounds almost equal in volume going from active to passive.

When I bought the new 01' it was with the intent on modding both the PU's and Pre but the more I play it I'm convinced that this one sounds worlds better than the first one. After playing a Conklin GT-7, then a Yamaha TRB-1006 my band members are glad I switched back to Lakland. Go figure, LOL.

So, you're saying that you had a stock (i.e., it had an MK1 preamp in it) 55-01 that took "a severe dive in volume" when the volume knob was pulled. That's curious as there's really no reason for it to do that.

Did you buy that bass used? And if so, is it possible that the preamp had been changed out.

As has been brought up in the last several posts, the MK1 preamp push/pull is not an active/passive switch. It bypasses the tone controls.

Very Sharp!

I'm taking delivery of something today that I think only the 01 club can appreciate.

Blocks and bindings are a perfect fit for 01's and 02's.

Love it!

I picked mine up at a local guitar shop for $475 used, but looks practically brand new. I got it on black friday. I guess that's a pretty good price to pay for one of these. I'm never getting rid of it. She sounds so freaking good!

I've found so far that the Marcus Miller Fat Beams sound the best on it. I'm not sure about other strings that would be good on a Lakland 01?

Keep in Mind, that these Basses cost more in Germany than in the USA. In Germany these 55-01 Deluxe cost 890,- Eur. wich is equal to round about 1190,- USD

I got these for at least 680,- Eur. with Shipping from Great Britain to Germany included and the Bass is "like new". Bought in Oct./11 and so I am satisfied with my Deal.

Picking up my 55-01 deluxe Ltd tomorrow from Carl Pedigo (Chicago Bass Dr at Lakland shop). He dressed the fret ends and I had him replace the plastic nut with a bone nut and replace the stock electronics with Nordstrand 3 band preamp and Big Split pickups. I'll post pics next week.

Holy Mother Ship, batman. Taking it back to the source. That sounds like a very nice upgrade, with the bonus of Carl's TLC applied.

I just bought a tone hammer (OBP3 in a box).
WoW! I did not know what I've been missing!!!
That will be real nice in a 5501...
