Lakland LOG 5 String P bass, I hope I like it

I got sick and did some window shoppin' and next thing I know I am pulling for the card and ordering a LOG bass from Bass Northwest. It shipped today

What do you guys think of these things. Am I going to be disappointed with the rosewood instead of the maple board? I am just hoping for a focused B. I read somewhere that the Lakland LOGs came standard with the Nordstrand. Not sure if they made them with the Hansen Vintage or Neo options. Anyone know?

And the most important question, which strings? I have been thinking about a set of Osborn flats, probably the lighter set... But I love P basses with rounds too.

Here's some pics from Bass NW. I figure if I don't dig it, I can maybe move it for about the same coin.

I think you will be pleased. Several of the Lakie fans on TB really like the EB cobalt strings.

I have one (with the Lakland vintage P pickup) and love it.

these came with the Hanson Neo-punch std and the vintage as an option.

These were part of the first Skyline P5s made.

The original US models had Nordys since Hanson had not fully developed their P5 in time for production (I have one of those as well)

congrats and make sure to post pics in the LOG forum!

You'll not be disappointed.
I purchased one of the original 30 and I'm still crazy about mine. I have several 5 string basses (Laklands and MTD's) and the B on my LOG bass just rumbles like clean, clear thunder. When I drop below E, I'm just immersed in the tone of the B string. I ordered mine with the vintage pickup. One caveat, I was not able to get the B string tone I wanted without some EQ tweaking. The key for me was plugging it into my Tone Hammer. Now it's my favorite. It's very focused, with a punchy, round fundamental and great overtones that seem to go on forever. It's also the liveliest of my Lakland's, quick to respond also requires that I play using cleaner technique (which I should be doing anyway).

I put DR Neons on mine. It came with D'addario's on it (which sounded great).
It put the Neons on for a gag at gig I was playing.
They have been on for 6 months now.
Enjoy your new bass!

I am not staying up with the times. I did not know EB had a new type of string. Looks like they are somewhere between nickel and steel in tone. I may start with the 45-105 nickel Carvins or the 40-100 steel Carvins I have laying around.

Any easy way to tell the difference between the Vintage and Neo Punch?

Maybe I will have to check out the LOG forum. Thanks for the tip.

Interesting LOG. I did not know they made them sunburst. That is the only sunburst with blocks I have seen. Very cool looking combination.

Did you do your B string experimentations with the DR Neons? DR B strings do not have the greatest reputation. While everyone says the Sadowsky B strings are incredible, I find my RV5 to be very picky. The Labella (Carvins, Peduallas) tapers are by far the best. But it limits your choices. I hate having to pick a set strings just for the B string which only accounts for 5% of the notes you play.

The easiest way is to listen.
There are no marking on the shell.
The pickups sound very different.
There are sound bites on the LOG forum and you can clearly hear the difference.
That's how we chose between the 3 pickups.

I'm not a P-Bass fan at all but I will admit. P-Bass's look really good as 5 strings. This looks like a really nice axe. I actually like the way it looks.

I worked out my B issues with the D'Addarios.
Once I put the Neon's on I had the tone right were I wanted it.

I have not had issues with B strings in general (String sets).
Maybe I've been lucky, but I've never had a bad string.
I generally only use D'Addario's, Laklands, MTD's and Dunlops.

Thanks!

I feel the same way.
P Basses DO look good with 5 strings!!!
Some people just get it.

We had to beg for years to get a Lakland P5.
The Lakland P5 is largely due to the LOG group.

And it was worth the wait...

Congrats. Well Done. I might have to consider adding one at a later date.

Not the best picture with Neons but it's handy...

I had one of the original 30.

If you like 35" basses, you will love it.

If you don't, then you won't.

I have not had a 35" scale since a Q5 about 7-8 years ago. I recall playing a Lakland 55-01 in a local shop and was surprised at home comfortable the Lakland 5 string 35" scale felt to me. In researching the Fender P5 and Lakland, it seemed like a 35" Lakland might increase my odds on a good B. We shall see...

I've had both basses in question. My Lakland B's were better than my Fender B. But I have 34" scale basses with B's as good as my Laklands.

Thanks. I really was not ready to buy but I figured this one was not going to be around long. And I am sucker for blocks.

Edit: I added pics to the original post as Bass NW took down the link.
