Larry Graham's J-Bass

I was reading the January issue of Premier Guitar and there was a big spread on Larry Graham. And, of course, there is the section that lists his equipment. His J-bass uses a 27-volt preamp. 27 volts! Yowza!

I saw him playing on a white warwick and he didn't play it with the same AUTHORITY. It looked too small for him and that he was fighting it.

Yeah, his lines & tone on the Sly & The Family Stone stuff was as classic as Motown, Stax & James Brown.

18v preamp basses have a lot of power to them...by what advantage would 27 volts give?

3 nine volt batteries or a Alembic like power supply?

That's head room. Don't spill a drink on that pup.

I remember back in the 90's visiting a buddy who worked at Seymour Duncan and talking about headroom in their preamps, and him telling me their pre's are well capable of running at 27v.
