It's got mojo and a killer tone.
So, what is everyone's favorite string to use on their vintage Rays?

I have a natural finish '80 Sabre strung with DR Marcus Miller Fat Beams and a 'burst '79 Sabre strung with DR Black Beauties. I think I like the tone of the Fat Beams more, but the Black Beauties feel better and last longer.
The 'burst Sabre used to have LaBella Flats, but I didn't really like them on that bass, so I put them on my son's Squire VM Fretless.

I wonder: How deep is the neck pocket? Of the few pre-EBs I was able to play, the neck pocket was deeper than on EBMMs thus leaving considerably less room for slap/pop technique. |

I measured by putting a straight edge on the bass and measuring to the corner of the neck pocket. I didn't remove the necks. I reserve the right to claim bad eyesight due to old age.
My 30th Anniv. Sr is 1/2"
My Classic SR4 is 17/32
My '77 SR is 18/32
They're all pretty close and my measuring is less than scientific. |

I've got DR SS Hi Beams on my '83 Stingray. Those are typically my favorite string on several other basses in my stable. Both of these strings seem to work well with my very low setup. So I typically prefer a string with the right amount of tension to work well with my preferred setup.

Just a stupid question...but did he change the battery with a known good battery?
I think that East makes a preamp for the Stingray. There is also a thread here on TB about building your own which might not be something that you don't want to mess with.
Here is a link to the John East preamp: http://www.bestbassgear.com/john-east-preamp.htm
Also, Carey Nordstrand is a heck of a nice guy and does really great things with pickups and preamps: http://www.nordstrandpickups.com/preamp/
