I bought an Ibanez SR 505 to start out with, as I was just learning, the 5 just confused me. The neck size is strictly a personal thing, Really thin necks can be uncomfortable as can really fat necks. right now I have 2 Peavy foundations (Thin necks) an Epi T-bird(big neck)and a Squire II P-bass (Medium neck). I find the Squire to be most comfortable for me. I'm giving my opinion as a fellow beginner(less than a year)Start cheap & easy, you can & will upgrade after you know what feels right. I thought I was the **** with my pretty, active 5 string and that only lasted a couple of months.

Check out the Peavey Millenium AC BXP 5 dude. I have the 4 string which was my first bass, got it in a sale for about £150 down from £250 a long time ago but they've gone up in price over here. I'm sure they'll be within your range.

It's an excellent starter bass which is light, has a nice thin neck, active pickups with eq so you can get so many different tones from it.

If you see one in your local shop give it a shot and see what you think.

Check out this bass right here on TB that subtlestew has listed:
Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass Special HB in Black - Close to New!

This Jag has a slender neck, looks beautiful, and is a steal for the money (check You Tube for demos). Great beginner bass.
