I buy used, and sometimes I buy cheap (SX, Brice, etc.). My current main bass is a Gibson Thunderbird short scale, which cost $1000 and was a major splurge for me. I had just returned from Las Vegas where I won $5400 on the Mega Bucks slots, so I treated myself. My best sounding bass is a $300 Ibanez, and I play it a lot. I have 3 US Peaveys (which are a steal, I didn't pay more than $300 for any of them).
I am definitely NOT a gear snob. But i can understand why someone would pay a lot for a bass - it is a tool and if you are a professional you use the best tools you can.
Jeans are just jeans.

It just sound and play great, I see no reason why people say that mexican made sucks. all the mexican Fender's I have played have been great instruments that I'd never been afraid to gig. |

However, I WILL say this again, if one of my buds told me that he paid $300 for a pair of jeans....There is a better than even chance that he is going to get punched in the head, because SOMEONE has to knock some sense into his noggin.
And, to be fair, if I told one of my buds that I had just spent $15,000 for a new Fodera, I have no doubt whatsoever, that he would kick my ass...immediately before my Wife filed for divorce.
But what the hell, if you want to drop that kind of cash on threads....go for it.

| | | | You guys crack me up.
So a musicians credibility is harmed when his sig instrument is made in Mexico?
Oh really....does this have an impact on his music? Would it sound mexican?
Can you only play Asian scales on a MIChina bass?
Only MIA is high quality?
Check out the prices MIJ Basses from the 80s fetch, and report back...
Prices in general?
Manufacturing cost is only one parameter for setting a price. It's really what people are willing to pay for something. |

Yes, I own several basses that ran Over $1,000 (and are all American made) but I ALSO own MIM basses and cheap(ER) American made Fenders. And, as of late, I have been playing the living daylight out of my new American Special Precision $699, and the MIM Antigua Precision $750 and absolutely LOVE them both.
When I leave next week to hit the road after Thanksgiving, I wil be playing those 2 every night for 6 weeks.

Thought it was already happening, but some are holding onto the old ways.
It's global, kids. Get used to it.

I did buy a $135 pair of jeans once. I had just come off a 2 week stint in Vegas, had about $2000 in my pocket and decided to splurge. They looked awesome... Lasted about 6 months before I got a huge rip down the leg. I'm back to shopping at Kohl's now. |

| | | | Your Jeans could cost $50 or $300, the point I was making is that they still cost $5 Dollars to produce. No one will pay $150 for a pair of Levis but will pay that for whatever brand a fashion victim is wearing these days. I was trying to make a point about branding. |

Are you saying Fender is ripping us off by making too much money on the basses not made in the US? |

He's saying that we deserve to buy only American-made products because as hard-working, all-American Americans, thats how we should treat our fellow man. And because stuff is only made in America, it seems right that we pay less because we too are Americans. Also, he says that our fellow Americans are ripping us off because its apparently very cheap to manufacture a bass in America where there is minimum wage among other things such as quality control and professional inspection, which coincidentally are the things that push prices up.
But then again, this argument falls apart because as you can see, I am not an American. So I suppose that means that I should buy MIC or MIIndonesia basses only. You know, to support my fellow man.

The import tariffs, and the price of democratic socialism
I'll stick to my 80 hour work week with no benefits, and cheap Levi's made in Asia!
THAT'S the American way.
