I think the Squier VMJ's have a maple body, and they're pretty good, IMO...

My old Ritter had a maple body, it sounded amazing! I owned a hilton bass with a maple core, and it was all high and tinny. So i believe it has quite a bit to do with the pre and pups.
Hope this helped.

Some early G&L's used maple. I had a L-1000 and an SB-1 that were maple. Maybe some others but those two spring to mind.

Yes, very true. Put in a solid pair of pickups and those basses are AMAZING w/ a decent setup.

I've seen Pedullas, Ken Smiths, and Spectors made out of maple. I'm not a big fan of the tone I get from a maple body (a little too brittle for me) but they definitely build them out of the stuff.

Rickenbacker did this first in a bass as far as I know. And they have rarely strayed from this formula. Since I have gigged primarily with Rics at hundreds of shows now, I can tell you with confidence they sound and hold up great. Hard rock maple is a tough, durable wood with a great sound. There's a reason it's the most common wood used for necks.

The nice thing about Rickenbacker is all of their maple is sustainably farmed. Trees are grown for ~10 years and harvested if I remember correctly.

If I ever do a parts bass I will probably use a maple body, even if it's a Precision-style, etc.

I had an Ibanez SR500 and a couple Pedullas. They sounded great as a body wood IMO. A certain nice density to the sound. I'd be happy to get another maple bodied bass.

Hi George! VMJ is actually agathis, a variation of pine. HTH,

Sean

Edit: woops, that may just be the VMJ fretless! Thanks.
