That's a "hanger hole". That's what they use to hang the bass while spraying the finish. Common with MIM basses.

This has been discussed many, many times here. It's used to smuggle cocaine from Mexico.

I've seen it on MIA basses as well. I wonder why they wouldn't just use a hole in the neck pocket, instead?

These are for cnc machines, USA basses have them as well. There are some models that dont, but mainly just the Reissue series. The MIM classic 60's jazz doesnt have a hole.

I don’t think the Squiers have them, unless things have changed recently.

I was wondering that myself about my recently acquired MIM jazz. I was really hoping there wouldn't be routing so I could leave it pickguardless, but alas. Mine has that hole, and the route from the pup.

As Lucas mentions, the hole is for the CNC machine ... paddles are attached to the neck pocket for painting the bodies, the hole has nothing to do with that ...

Highway 1 and ONES have never had a CNC hole, the AmSpecs have no CNC hole, and it is my understanding that they have added them to the current production of Classic Series 60's J's ('01 to about '08-9 range did not) as well as the 70's that OP has pictured ...

... Squiers do not use the CNC hole, but even the models that do NOT have channel routing to the control cavity usually have enlarged neck pup routes ... some of the very first Squier VM nat finish J's did not have either, but ever since they have added the full channel routing ...

I know a guitar that would be perfect for that particular role.

A couple of years ago, I bought a used Fender Tele Reissue from a local shop.
Brought it home, took the pickguard off to clean, and this is what I saw.

I immediately put the pickguard back on, drove back to the store and returned it.

hanger holes are common on MIMs like mentioned but its still closed routed from the neck pickup to the controls. most MIMs are open routed, but since this is a '70s jazz they closed it.
dumb.
