MM Stingray for cheap?

So, the title says it all :D is there any cheaper version of the MM Stingray? Like around $550, I remember seeing one in Musicians Friend but now I don't find it. Something like what Squier is to Fender :)
Thanks!

Sterling by musicman ray34. It's a great bass I owned one a while back and it sounded amazing. They also have a ray 34 ca or classic active which comes in a cool mint green color. They are really worth the money.

There's the Sterling Ray 34 which is about $600. There's the Sub Sterling line which is about $275. I've played the Subs and they're nice basses. I own a Ray 34 and it does all the Stingraying I need.

I think you're referring to the OLP.

There is also a "newer" brand out called, sterling by musicman. They have a good cheaper version of the real thing.

I have an original "The Bass Company" 'Ray knock off scored on the classifieds for $400. I got it for a cheap way to see if I liked the MM pup and an active pre. Like'd it so much that I never bothered with the upgrade to Musicman. :bassist:

Man just get a used Ray for that price, you can find them easily for $7-900 all day long.

You can pick up a used MM SUB for about that or less. US made. Just have to look for them.

+1 I like mine a whole lot, tho I haven't bonded with the SUB 5 as well

The original EBMM SLO SUBs were remarkable deals, usually.

I got one new some years ago for $329 at GC when its hideous wine-vomit purple color option was mercifully discontinued.

I was also fortunate in that it was a passive, which makes it a great studio bass.

As profoundly ugly and heavy as it is with the slab body, it may be the best non-Fender recording bass I've ever used.

You can have the real thing, used of course, below $800 if the case is missing (or sell the case to me) and the color isn't popular.

In the extreme case, sell the pickup and electronics, which is another $200 and get a passive pickup. Not quite the same thing but same quality as the real thing.

I'm not sure I'm following your point, but AFAIK from EBMM mavens, the pickup in the Stingray, the EBMM SUB active and passive versions are the same unit.

Ray34's and Ray35's can be had for under $600 if you like the color Black.

I can't put mine down sometimes, but I only recently bought it. Mine is a SUB 4, I can't imagine how big the neck is on a SUB 5. The neck on mine is just massive, starting with a bigger nut size.

I think the sheer massiveness of those SUBs may account for the singular absence of dead spots on mine, which makes it such a great recording bass -- you don't have to dig your way out of them, play around them or try to fix them with gobs of compression (only playing around them really works). That unique position of the EBMM G machine is also supposed to be for purposes of canceling the notorious dead spots of the G on the Fender design, but I haven't decided if I believe it yet.

The spacing on all EBMM and SBMM SR5, Ray35 and SUB5 basses is 17.5mm which is actually tighter than Fender 5-strings, which average out at 18mm.

The allows the 5 stringers necks to be narrower than the Fenders and they actually feel pretty normal.

I hadn't really noticed the size truth be told. Chuck who worked at Bass Emporium when they had the shop set it up for me and ever since it has been a great player, easily among the best I've ever owned. A good bass plus a good setup is a great bass to play! That plus the SGD Lutherie MM preamp has made it my go to bass most of the time.

Interesting about the 5 strings. Despite it's size the neck on mine isn't too big, and it's absolutely perfectly balanced. It weighs in at a reasonable 9.7 lbs.

GAPendragon 03-10-2013 10:17 AM

I'm building one which when it's done will have cost about $450. But that's because I'm teaching myself how to put them together and just happend to find this particular neck/body set being sold cheaply on eBay around the time I decided on a 5 string. They're from a Vintage copy originally.
