MM Stingray for cheap? So, the title says it all :D is there any cheaper version of the MM Stingray? Like around $550, I remember seeing one in Musicians Friend but now I don't find it. Something like what Squier is to Fender :) Thanks! |
Sterling by musicman ray34. It's a great bass I owned one a while back and it sounded amazing. They also have a ray 34 ca or classic active which comes in a cool mint green color. They are really worth the money. |
There's the Sterling Ray 34 which is about $600. There's the Sub Sterling line which is about $275. I've played the Subs and they're nice basses. I own a Ray 34 and it does all the Stingraying I need. |
I think you're referring to the OLP. There is also a "newer" brand out called, sterling by musicman. They have a good cheaper version of the real thing. |
I have an original "The Bass Company" 'Ray knock off scored on the classifieds for $400. I got it for a cheap way to see if I liked the MM pup and an active pre. Like'd it so much that I never bothered with the upgrade to Musicman. :bassist: |
Man just get a used Ray for that price, you can find them easily for $7-900 all day long. |
You can pick up a used MM SUB for about that or less. US made. Just have to look for them. |

I got one new some years ago for $329 at GC when its hideous wine-vomit purple color option was mercifully discontinued. I was also fortunate in that it was a passive, which makes it a great studio bass. As profoundly ugly and heavy as it is with the slab body, it may be the best non-Fender recording bass I've ever used. |
You can have the real thing, used of course, below $800 if the case is missing (or sell the case to me) and the color isn't popular. In the extreme case, sell the pickup and electronics, which is another $200 and get a passive pickup. Not quite the same thing but same quality as the real thing. |

Ray34's and Ray35's can be had for under $600 if you like the color Black. |

The spacing on all EBMM and SBMM SR5, Ray35 and SUB5 basses is 17.5mm which is actually tighter than Fender 5-strings, which average out at 18mm. The allows the 5 stringers necks to be narrower than the Fenders and they actually feel pretty normal. Bob |

Interesting about the 5 strings. Despite it's size the neck on mine isn't too big, and it's absolutely perfectly balanced. It weighs in at a reasonable 9.7 lbs. ![]() |
I'm building one which when it's done will have cost about $450. But that's because I'm teaching myself how to put them together and just happend to find this particular neck/body set being sold cheaply on eBay around the time I decided on a 5 string. They're from a Vintage copy originally. |
