Seems silly because it IS silly! I've seen so many noobs here on TB talk about the SX they are going to buy and how the first thing is they are going to swap out the pickups! Duh. I've done a LOT of mods to my SX herd but new pickups has never been one of them. In fact the ONLY two basses that got pickups changed was my MIM Fender Jazz V and my Squier P/J 5er. BOTH came with seriously bad pickups.
That's the point. You don't mod the bass just for drill in hopes that somehow it will be magically transformed, you mod the bass because to YOU there is something about it you don't like. And when you don't like something you either change it so you DO like it or just dump the whole thing and start over.
With expensive basses I'm more than a little reluctant to start drilling and sawing on them. But if I really don't like something, I will. I rewired the pickup switches in my Modulus and now I simply LOVE that bass even more than I did before (which was a LOT). I really don't want to start drilling on the fretless Alembic because the neck markers are dull brass and you can't see them anymore (I REALLY should have ordered the LED option), but I probably will get one of those stick-on LED strips.
Which is another point. Many mods are reversible so you don't have to worry about those. If something irritates you about a given bass and the fix is reversible, well why not? Provided it's not TOO much cash.
So it's not just about taking some crap bass and swaping everything out hoping for a miracle. It's about first picking out a bass that for various reason you REALLY like. And THEN going after those few things that aren't quite what you want. Do that and you may not turn a pig's ear into a silk purse, but you may have a bass that for YOU, you wouldn't trade for anything!
