Modding a short scale SX

Alright, so I picked up an SX(essex) to see what all the hub-bub is about. Gotta admit, for the price it far exceeds my expectations. It is already modded a bit with a new jack, and potentiometers, but I actually really like the pup on it so I doubt I will change that. The neck and the body is fantastic. Obviously not as fine-tuned as some Fenders I've owned and played, but not over 500 dollars worth away from them either. Here is the thing, the SX I got is a short scale and I do want to put a high mass bridge and new tuners on it. What are my options to keep it balanced well in weight? Are there any good tuners that drop right in or will I need to drill new holes? The ones that are on it are their standard elephant ear, rounded plates on the back, open gear ones. Thanks!
