I liked the modern neck the best. The wasn't a big difference between the two, however, I did notice a little more "bite" in the modern neck clip.

That pau ferro neck/ebony fretboard combination is awesome!

At first I couldn't hear much difference. Then I put on the headphones.

I too heard quite a big difference. They both sound great.

Thanks Dan!

I agree with the general assesment of the tonal differences. I could hear a difference on my iphone even without headphones. While they are different, its not hard to take a step back from the tone microscope to hear that they sound like the same kind of bass.

Agreed. I think that extra bite comes more from the wood combo than the graphite rods. It's nice to have it there, and it can be taken out with the tone knob if need be.

Maybe the graphite rods keep the neck stiffer and that adds the "zing" ?

And the vintage has more give to "soften" the bite?

It makes perfect sense to me - that the neck has way more influence on the sound than the body could ever have.

(ps: love that riff you play there - is it from a song? or your own? - I really dig it.)

Hey Dan,

I just tried to play the "modern" and there was no sound.

The "vintage" is still there.

Edit: just tried again and both are there.

I'll take the "modern" neck and play it so it sounds modern or vintage

Actually, I prefer a full graphite neck, but the wood doesn't bother me.

Great and fun post as always Dan. I enjoy listen to your clips.

Thanks for the comparison clip, and great riff and recording quality.

I compared the clips to death pretty much, and my conclustion was the vintage neck was fuller sounding (you can really hear it in the first few seconds), but the ending part (the "tda, tda") and parts where there was more emphasis on the note, then the modern neck has it more in your face.

This confirms a lot for me. Thanks again.

I just listened to both through my studio headphone/monitors. Most obviously a difference, it sounds like the vintage neck shifts the resonance frequency down in comparison to the modern neck.

I have a maple fretboard version of the vintage neck on my MIA jazz. I think it sounds great, does not have that mid-bump that's evident in your recording.

For the bass in the OP recordings, I would utilize the modern neck. More usable of a sound/tone to me
