Yes, I did leave my original Q5 body with Jack. Here's a picture of it. http://www.artaraya.com/bass.htm
Is it the one he used for yours? If so, that would be too cool! |

On your site you also mention another custom build from a luthier in Carmel NY. I lived there for years. Had no idea we had a bass builder in town!
Anyway - we're wandering farther from Modulus content.
But it was very cool to meet you.

But it was very cool to meet you. | I do still have it, although right now it's gutted to provide pickups for my new (to me) Q6 TBX. I can find some pictures. It has served me very well and has one of the nicest profile Modulus necks I've ever played. It's a 1990 neck with a very flat profile, so for someone like me, with pretty small hands, it makes a 6 string playable.
My website is woefully out of date, so the pictures that are there are most likely with the previous body.
The bass I got from Ron Gulliotta was made in 1985. I have no idea if he's still there or not. I can't say it was an unqualified success. Had I known Moduli were available back then, I would have gone with that!

Looks great. How perfect that Jack had that body available for you. So happy that it worked out for all!
I'm happy with my spalted maple top body that he made for me as well. I was trying to lighten the weight of the bass so he made a body with sound chambers cut throughout the body and then put a thin laminate of gorgeous spalted maple on top. |

I loved his work and when I submitted the body I made to far too many preamp experiments with resultant holes all over, I asked him to make one for me, but he said he one sitting around. As lovely as it is, I have to say that I'm not convinced it's the best sounding body. It's less resonant than the mahogany body it replaced. Modulus does tend to put a very thick finish on their bodies and I think it chokes the tone a bit. I bet the body Jack made for you sounds wonderful. This bass might be up for sale to help pay off the TBX. I'll have to see how things go. It would be sad to say goodbye; it has been through so much with me and the neck is so perfect.

| | Well, Ahoy Paloi | | Join Date: Sep 2009 Location: Cape Cod, MA | | | Just getting home from band practice with my Modulus Q5 Sienna. Man, I love that bass, especially as we learn a Phish cover (Rift). While I love my Roscoes, my Q5 ALWAYS sounds great and the neck is as solid as a rock.. Just sayin'.
Now, to the IPA..... |

I'm now saving my pennies for an Avalon U5, which I'm convinced WILL blow me away. |

Will be running directly into my PA. | Fortunately, Sleepy, I have a great DI out of my Genz Benz Streamliner 900 head (tube DI). Live it sounds great and warm; done a bunch of outdoor gigs on the Cape this summer and fall and never failed to sound good. The sound guys love it.
If I had the $$ I would buy a Reddi tube DI (upwards of $800.00). |

It's tough for me to say however since I was listening thru IEM and it sounded HORRIBLE to my ears. I could never dial in a tone I liked.
I've also owned the Avalon U5. I used it as both a preamp and DI. This sounded great in the house and great on stage. It's going to be a very clean uncolored sound. So make sure you're into that.
I also played a large mega-church conference in Orlando and this was the DI used by the church. The bass sounded HUGE in the room - like cannons going off. I'm sure that their sound system was mostly responsible for this but the Modulus going thru the U5 was certainly part of the power packed formula!
IMO the U5 is a much better pairing with your Modulus, according to my experience. Quote:
