Most people you talk to, who aren't musicians don't know who Jaco Pastorius, Marcus Miller, or Victor Wooten are. I remember listening to Monk Montgomery's recordings as a kid and thinking what an innovator he was. But none of my friends, except a few jazz nuts knew who he was.

Collectors will determine if the price is realistic.

It's the second time around the ebayer is trying to sell it. Zero bids the first time. For 51 grand he's not even willing to ship it. I think he's gonna be stuck with it. It is beautiful though.

"He was a pioneer of the electric bass, first musician to actively tour and perform with Leo Fender's new invention the Precision Bass in 1953. His younger brother Wes Montgomery is probably the most famous jazz guitarist in history. Few seem to remember Monk Montgomery himself though. Here's a funky (for the era) little cut from the man's aptly titled album "Bass Odyssey".

So funny that his tone is so much like Wes' guitar tone in some spots.

FWIW, I wish someone would reissue his three solo albums. Seriously. So much good stuff...grooving soul/jazz with fat flatwound tone.

Initially, I didn't bother to look at the ebay ad.

Exactly. By the way, where's Monk's old P-bass? Surely that one is loaded with mojo.

There are a couple of The Mastersounds' albums, on iTunes, that one can check out to hear Monk's sound - FREE.

You can get a new Fender for quite a bit cheaper than that. I guess buying used is always the way to go.

Looks like this auction didn't attract anything but amusement.

This is the new link - http://www.ebay.com/itm/MONK-MONTGOM...-/251212051108

It has 19 bids and plenty of new photos.

Thanks-
My name is Angie Seegers, and I've been friends with Monk's son for 20 years, and I play violin for him.

Take Care!!!

*The images of what Monk did where a nut was cracked and a sticker from France on the case I personally think really give it a soul. ENJOY THE NEW IMAGES THAT ARE UP >>

Was the $51,000 a typo the first time around? It's at $5,100 right now on eBay. Definitely makes more sense.
