I just purchased--and returned--three identical Gibson Les Paul Junior Specials from Sweetwater. Their 51 Point Inspection didn't catch or correct some pretty obvious factory flaws.
You buys long distance, you takes your chances. Be prepared to either enter the game of bass roulette or a little DIY. I've had many good long distance purchases, but just as many that involved either returns or getting myself or my tech to fix an issue. I've just resigned myself that this is the way guitar and bass purchases go. With around 120 guitars and basses in my collection, I know the game all too well, and these are the rules regardless of where you do your business.

They told me they ship what they get when I called, but anyone who picked up that box woulda felt a bass bouncing around inside. They offered to replace it if there were any problems, but still.. |

I never knew this, but a rep over the phone told me that MusiciansFriend warehouse unbox and inspect the guitars/basses over $500
Then MF will re seal it and ship to you
Is this true?
I got my new Fender Jazz bass in the mail a few days ago from MF and the factory staples are already opened, and the box was heavily taped when I got it.
Sorry I am a first time bass buyer
Thanks | The only online store I know that does this is Sweetwater, with their "55 point inspection", which, IIRC includes a setup.
Bought a brand new MIA Jazz from them about 3-4 yers ago, cost about $1200, AFAIK, they did no inspection prior to shipping. Didn't matter, as I got a really nice one (best built bass I've ever seen). I've had nothing but good experiences buying (including two basses) from MF.

| | Registered User | | Join Date: Apr 2011 Location: Newport News,Va | | | I just bought a 62 avri Precision this past October. I ordered from MF, as I had bought a FG Ric 4003 from them that was flawless, and for the best price going at the time. I recieved my first 62 P and the tone know was rolling around in the case, and someone had scratched the heck out of the pickguard. A return? Yes.
I had them send me another, and the moisture packets had been busted open, and the bass had been played and scratched, and the case candy was half missing. At this point I was steaming, but the guy told me they would cross ship a new one out, overnight, and trust me to ship mine to them, and would open it, and do a full inspection.
Another used bass. At this point I called Tony at Sweetwater, and he had 1 in stock(3TSB), and had a pic of it online. I bought it, and while the tech was setting up the bass; his screwdriver fell, and made a mark on the bass. Tony called me immediately, and emailed me pics of it, and offered to discount the bass, or order me a new one.
The neck on the one they had looked almost like Brazillian RW, so I took the discount, and took delivery of the bass. I was extremely disappointed in MF, and I don't think I'll ever buy another expensive instrument there again. Sweetwater is top shelf though. |

I think someone may have misinformed you regarding extra packaging. Our packers will add packaging and protecting materials automatically if they feel it may get damaged in shipment without it. We can however accommodate special requests for shipping by putting it on hold and getting with the warehouse. Quote:

I would love to look into how this happened and get the feedback to the warehouse to follow up. Quote:

| | | | Apparently the actual bass is brand new, the box was just opened.
The bass had no scratches nor blemishes, and the "white foam" cover that covers the bass seems to have taken the string shape when I first unboxed it...
(It would be hard to repackage the bass with the foam cover on lined up to the same string molded shape)
but still, MusiciansFriend gave me a good amount of credit towards my next purchase, and the rep even knocked down a few bucks for my bass just for shipping an opened box or return item to me even though I bought it new..
No hassle, and I am satisfied with MF's services.
