First impressions: It's a lot smaller than I had imagined for a bass called "Big Al!" I'm not complaining, just surprised... I guess I was imagining a Gibson-Grabber-sized slab somehow. I bought it sight unseen because a) They look super-cool, and B) I was seduced by Ed Friedlander's test-drive video. Well, it's definitely super-cool looking, and I have been able to get that "P-Bass only better" sound out of the middle pickup, so all's well in that department. Very much looking forward to band practice tonight. It's a bit clanky, and I'll need to raise the action a wee bit to compensate for my hamfisted technique, but all in good time.

Its our once-a-year bluegrass/roots gig we do for a historical society in my town. Play some old-time music, and some more modern songs done the old fashioned way. the Big Al versatility will shine thru. If I get some pics, I'll post 'em.

My drummer, a hot rod enthusiast, compared it favorably to an Ed "Big Daddy" Roth paint job. Needless to say, when I plugged it in and we started playing, everyone was well pleased. Active mode is very powerful but doesn't feel quite as over-the-top as my Bongo. I'm really glad I pulled the trigger on this one.

I too played my Al at prax last night, getting ready for tomorrow's gig, and I swear I was getting upright-like tone with flats and the neck and middle buttons pushed.

marc: It looks a lot better in person, but thanks!
Holdsg: It's funny, because I am in a punk/garage rock type band and I was looking for the exact opposite of the flatwound sound. It's great that this bass can do both sounds so well.

I'm really looking forward to my "Green Meanie."
Just wondering what brand of flats you prefer on your Big Al. | How have would you compare the pickup combinations? I'm hoping that a 5 stringer will be my next jump but the pup combos is where I get a little indecisive.
I really love the MM humbucker sound but to have a 5SSS just sounds amazing. The Big Al get's my vote for the coolest looking MM bass for sure! |
