If it helps at all, I've been playing basses with gloss finishes - including the back of the neck - for many, many years. Never once had any problem getting around on one. Never felt one get sticky or tacky to any significant degree.
Perhaps the problem arises when one palms
the neck, instead of playing it with only the pad of the thumb centered on the back, as is recommended. Playing with a light grip / light touch, as well as with minimal physical contact on the back of the neck undoubtedly contributes to optimum playability - even with a gloss neck.
