ok, lets see:

1984 - I was 14 - inherited (from a friend) a no name SG shaped bass that was AWFUL!!!! and an old Kustom 2x15 that was also very bad. I did inherit my 68 Fender Bassman 50 Watt head in the same deal, so in hindsight that was not too bad!!

1984 - bought my (current) baby - 72 Fender P-bass, and also bought a Peavy TNT 50 1x15 combo. I thought I was in heaven. Got rid of the SG bass and the Kustom cab. Kept the Bassman though

1986 - bought my Charvel 3b

1990 - the TNT gave out, bought my Hartke 4x10 and the head that came with it. Don't remember the model number but it was the top of the line Hartke set up at the time. Used this set up all through the 90's

2005 - switched from the Hartke to most of the rig I have now (thanks to the guitarist in my current band). By this time, I as pretty well out of the gear loop/scene, so I didn't know much about new stuff. That rig was a Yamaha P3500S power amp, Sans Amp RBI, BBE Sonic Maximizer 662 coming out of an Avatar b410 and a homemade 2x15 with Eminence speakers.

About this time I also inherited my 80 Jazz bass from another friend.

2011 - the Yamaha power amp gave out, replaced it with the current QSC that I have now. Also took the BBE out of the chain..it was unnecessary

hope to add another B410 and a 70's era Ric to the set up in the future

Then:

BASSES

The Good

Ric 4001, Pedulla, and a Pre Gibson Tobias 5 that killed GAS for me for almost 10 years.

The Ugly

A pile of second tier basses nary worthy of mention. The aforementioned were all firewood. Each and every one was horrid in it's own special way. I won't list because I will surely list a number of people's favorites.

AMPS/CABS

The Good

Trace Elliot stack. Really sorry that I got rid of it but I do not miss schlepping those cabs.

The Bad & The Ugly

If it distorts, weighs a minium of 150 pounds, and sounds muddy and farty, I have played it. If it sounds thin, tinny, has a juicer, sounds plinky, or just fails to make you shake your butt, I have played that too.

Now:

Basses

4 Bass main rotation. Lakland DJ5 Skyline, Fender FSR Antigua P, Fender Puple sparkle Franken Jazz, and I just received a Fender AVRI 62 P that seems to be pure magic. I have others that just stay home.

Amps/Cabs:

Hartke Kilo or Genz Benz Streamliner 900 depending on my mood. BNA Audio 215 Dually.

Interestingly, I despised Fender basses and refused to own or play one for over 25 years. Now I have a pile of them. What's up with that?

I don't have a lot because it's only recently that I've had decent money, so I haven't been able to buy gear that often. For that matter, I'm pretty happy with everything I have and can't think of much else I'd want.

Past/Sold: Ibanez SB-900, Peavey Cirrus BXP 4, Marshall MB-12 practice amp, Ibanez EXB-404.

Current: Peavey SessionBass head, US Peavey Cirrus 4, GK Backline 110, ADA MB-1 tube effects unit.

I'm also in the market for a fretless and now have my eye on the new Squier jazz, which- if I get it- will also be my first DIY custom paint job...stay tuned!

I did this list the other day.

I started with a Norma from the 60s. I now have 2 G&Ls (SB-1 and SB-2) and a Weston's Spectrum. For a rig I have an Aguilar TH500 and SWR and Ampeg cabs.

In between I have had 55 other basses including Fender, Pedulla, Spector, Sadowsky, Modulus, Music Man, Warwick, G&L, Gibson, Epiphone and Danelectro basses and amps ranging from Peavey to SVT to Bergantino/Stewart/Kern to Eden and others.

Wish I had all that money back and only a couple of the pieces of gear.

Wow, let's see if I can do this:

-Around 2000, I started with a right-handed Johnson P-bass copy I bought for $100 off eBay. I swapped the strings and played left handed, with some truly incredible neck dive. No bass amp the first couple of years: I practiced on an old guitar amp at home and plugged straight into a church PA for my first gigs.

-Got my first good bass in 2002, a walnut Carvin LB70, when my parents agreed to pay half as a high school graduation present.

-Almost immediately afterward I got my "second" Carvin LB70 -- the truss rod snapped on my first one within weeks or months of owning it, so Carvin was nice enough to build me a new one. It was lucky that happened, because the second is even better than the first.

-Bought my first bass amp in college, a Carvin R600 plus a Carvin RL 210T cab. I believe I bought the R600 on eBay and the cab brand new, but I could be wrong.

-Added a Carvin AC40F fretless semi-acoustic when I first started gigging in college. Always got some interesting comments when I pulled it out at hard rock/metal gigs.

-My rig evolved in college from the R600 head to a higher-wattage R900 head, and then ultimately to the Carvin DCM 1500 power amp and BBE BMax-T preamp setup that still serves as my gigging rig today. I also added two Carvin 15" cabs (RL15) at some point.

-Sold the AC40F and bought a Carvin B4 when I decided that I needed a backup fretted 4 for gigging more than I needed a fretless semi-acoustic. I also bought a Boss ME-50B effects unit around this time, which is still my sole gigging pedal.

-I officially deemed my original Johnson bass dead at the end of college, as I lent it to a friend of a bandmate who was learning bass and never saw it again...

---Intermission: No gear of note purchased in a four or five year period that included law school and various moves---

-In 2010, I got back into the fretless world with a Carvin B50F kit, which my Dad and I put together during various visits home over a few months. This is also my only 5-string.

-In 2011, I added a Gold Tone PBB resonator-style ABG for an acoustic project. I also picked up a lightweight Carvin BX500 head as backup and for practice/small gig use.

-Around that same time I sold the two Carvin 15" cabs to a buddy and bought a MarkBass 104HR (4x10) cab, which now gigs with my old Carvin 2x10 cab.

-After a few aborted attempts at entering the housing market, I repurposed some of my down-payment savings by ordering a custom 32" scale Zon VB-4 (which is still being built).

-Only a few weeks ago I caved into Gibson pressure from my new bandmates (who own only V's, Explorers, and SGs) and bought a worn cherry Flying V bass. A new nut and new strap position later, it's ready for some Hendrix-style lefty/righty goodness.

Ok, see how much I can remember -

About 1987, in high school, picked up my first bass and a little combo amp and played around with them in my dorm room. No idea what brand either was. All I recall about the bass was that it was black and had four strings.

Played less and less (never took lessons or joined a band), did not replace the bass when it was stolen in New York City about 1992 or 93.

Fast forward to 2009. Picked up a silver Ibanez SR100 used, in a package deal off CL with a Cort strat and a guitar practice amp for about $225. Got a little bass combo for another $50.

Winter of 2009/10, got a Washburn Taurus T-25 for Christmas which became my main bass; sold the Ibanez; bought an Ampeg BA-115hpt from a TBer, also a cheap digitech multi-effects pedal (BP60). Sold the Ibanez and practice amp.

A couple of ill-advised ebay purchases and resales as I discovered TB and GAS set in. Also bought an MIM Fender P with a MXR M-80 pedal from a guy on CL.

Christmas of 2010, got a Yamaha BB415. Over 2010-11, sold the Digitech pedal and started adding other pedals bit by bit: a Boss TU-2, Boss CEB-3, OC-3, LMB-1, and an MXR M-82. I think it was this year that I picked up an SX jazz for a while, but later donated it to a middle school jazz band fundraiser.

Christmas of 2011 (I owe a lot to Christmases), got some money that went to a Squier VM Jag (I was missing having a four-string).

Summer of 2012, a bunch of changes; bought a unique 5-string from John Toon, a luthier in kansas city (who is on TB). Put the Washburn and the Squier up for sale to cover the cost; the Washburn sold, the Squier went in trade for a Michael Kelly fretless ABG.

Last October or so, once again missing having a 4-string, picked up a used SX with a bridge humbucker from CL.

So the total list:
Basses:
Nameless high school starter bass
Ibanez SR100
Washburn Taurus T-25
(a couple of come-and-go ebay basses)
*Yamaha Bb415
MIM Fender precision
SX Jazz (LPB, old headstock)
Squier VM Jaguar
*John Toon 5-string
*Michael Kelly fretless "Dragonfly" acoustic bass
*SX Jazz w/humbucker

* = still owned.

Amps:
no-name high school practice amp
Ibanez soundwave 20 practice amp
*Ampeg BA-115HPT

Not really feeling a lot of GAS for basses anymore - I like the stable I have. Eventually I'd like to replace the SX with a Carvin SB4000, and a Ric is on my wish list but I'm not expecting to afford either of those for a long time to come unless I win Jeopardy. A more lightweight amp than the Ampeg is a more urgent desire right now, though.

Will miss some. Not going to count things I kept only briefly. Can't remember years, just a general timeline...

198? 4?5? Grand Prix Precision copy. All I could afford. It functioned. Gorilla bass combo. Same story. Replaced with Peavey 1X15 combo, weighed 93 tons. Loved the midrange, the additional frequency and shape controls on the mids were cool. I think the character of this amp has influenced every amp purchase I've made since.

87 ? 4001. Decided to make the Grand Prix fretless, didn't work out so well. Eventually tossed the neck, still have the body and some of the hardware.

Few years later.. Mouradian CS-74. Eventually sold the Ric, as the CS could get a similar tone, besides being superior in every way other than inlays. Still have the CS. Probably will till I die.

99 ? Eden 400 head, Hartke XL 4X10-1X15. Complex EQ but sounded great flat so I left it set there. US made Ovation fretless hollowbody, beautiful but insane feedback. Vox Apollo IV hollowbody, cool but sounded tired. Sold to finance Warwick Corvette fretless. That sounded fairly lame and had a telephone pole neck, but was pretty and very well made. Cheap BC Rich Warlock, tuned it BEAD, later ADGC. Put EMG Select pickups in it, actually sounded pretty good. Alembic Epic 5, Tobias Killer B 5, very good basses but wasn't using the 5 string much, sold both.

Then the years get reaallly hazy and I went through a flurry of buying and selling. Some standouts:

99-2005 ? Ristola fretless 4, Ristola 5 string. Turns out I missed having a 5 string, and I finally found the fretless tone I'd been hearing in my head for years. Alembic Exploiter, early 80's Tobias Basic - dream basses which exceeded expectations. I still have these. Amps included Mesa Strategy 400 w/Ashdown preamp, Ampeg SV(P? T?) preamp, SWR Interstellar Overdrive, Genz GBE600. Mesa 400,400+, Peavey Classic 400. Acoustic 320/408. Cabs including Peavey 1820, Berg HT 210/115, subs. Various Mesa Diesel cabs. Liked most of this stuff except the Peaveys but it wasn't "dream rig" level for me so I let it go. I liked the Mesa 400 tone but found that and more in the D-180, which I still have, along with a Sound City X188 and a Fender 400PS which is my most often used amp currently. Replaced the GBE600 with a 750, then replaced that with a NeoPak. Genz is about the only non tube powered amp I consistently like.

More recent items I still have - BC Rich Bich 8 string, mystery bass that looks like 34" copy of the old Overwater C bass, Epi EB-0, Steinberger L2, Carruthers upright, Ergo 8 string upright. For amps, B-15 and Roland Bass Micro Cube. Current cabs are Bag End D12-E, Carvin 10.2 NEO, Sunn 415M, and generic 1X15 loaded with a Mesa OEM EVM15. Cabs are mostly post '05 acquisitions IIRC but the EV came from one of my old Diesel cabs.

Buying has pretty much stopped, since I never find anything in a store or online that is as good as what I have back home. Selling has also stopped, as I have had bad experiences with Ebay and evil Craigslist lunatics.

OK- 1st bass was late 1979 in my senior year in HS

Memphis P bass (3TS), traded for:
all black Kramer Duke, Traded for:
Peavey T-40 (3TS), traded for:
Ibanez Musician (MC924) in Pearl Black: traded for
Alembic Exploiter- clear over quilted maple
Pre EBMM Sting Ray-natural/maple-1st time I owned 2 basses at the same time.
The Alembic and Ray were sold to make way for:
Spector NS2A in seethru blue
Steinberger XM-2 in white
Charvel 3B in red 'firecrackle'- now up to 3 basses for the 1st time ever.
somewhere in this timeframe I had a heavily modded late 70's Jazz pass through my hands.
The Steinberger and Charvel were sold to fund a 92 Carvin LB-75 (which I still own 20 years later!)
The Charvel was sold and a 48th St Custom Shop Jazz in 3TS was bought- now back down to 2 basses.
I stayed with just the Carvin and the Jazz for a number of years until about 2007.
Bought an ESP LTD B404SM (up to 3 again)
sold the Jazz to fund my Clement (still holding at 3)
My wife bought me an SX P-J for Xmas (up to 4)
bought a Yamaha BB614 (Up to 5)
Bought another Peavey T-40 (up to 6)
Bought a Schecter Riot (up to 7)
Bought an SX Jazz (up to 8)
Traded the Schecter for a franken 5er
parted out the franken 5er (down to 7)
sold the SX Jazz to fund a Peavey T-20 (still at 7)

What I have owned ...

A dozen or so different amps and even more speaker cabs
Over 50 different basses
several guitars and a couple of keyboards
pa equipment
mics, stands, cables, effects, recording equipment, etc ...

A lot of it got resold.

I went to Bass pro shop and to my surprise they didn't have a single bass guitar.

Unlike my guitar gear history my bass toys have been far fewer.

Rig #1
I got this a few years after I started playing guitar, and bought this rig during highschool as I started the garage band era of my musical life.

Bass:
Squier II P-bass - Black w/o pickguard and maple board

Amp:
Crate B80XL

Rig #2
Liked playing the bass and continued to do so, but most of my money went into guitars and keyboads at this point in time.

Basses:
Ibanez SR506 "The plank" - Black with gold hardware, prior to the current thinner necks.

Squier P-bass special "Meatbass" - Black w/ rosewood fretboard and a very red "tortise" pickguard

Amp:
Fender Bassman 60 - Mid 90's era wedge combo.
Into the guitar rig. Yeah I know (GSP2112 preamp/processor, QSC MX700 power amp, and Mesa 4x12)

The current stable:
Basses:
Carvin LB76 6 string- Quilted maple top in trans blu-burst with dual MM style HB's, no inlays on an ebony board.
Ibanez Ashula 6 string - Whitewashed ash with 4 (E, A, D, G) strings frettted and 2 strings fretless (D and G, same octave as normal)
LTD TA-600 - 4 string all black metal bass
Squier P-Bass Special (2nd round) - Satin finished wine red with black PG and rosewood fretboard

Amps:
Carvin BX1500 - 2 space rackmount head
Carvin BRX10.4 - 4x10 neo cab
Fender Bassman 60 - Mid 90's era wedge combo
Warwick - Fuzzy Blue 1x12
Occasionally I've goofed around with using my Carvin X100B 100w tube head into the BRX10.4 just to fake an old school Ampeg vibe. It actually works surprisingly well. In general the BX1500 and BRX get the most love though.

Vintage EST96 in white
would've kept it but it was far too distorted naturally for my playing so THEN got a
Yamaha BB414in white and on deciding that I liked it, also got a second bass which is
Rockinbetter 4003 in White
(both are my main basses I just pick whichever I feel like at the time)

all this in just 8 MONTHS lol (I had major GAS)
