I must say that the hype is true regarding the MTD ZX5's. I was blessed to pick up a used Dark Cherry MTD ZX5 with a maple neck. I've been playing this baby for almost a month to truly get a good feel and I must say I'm truly blown away.
Tone: I dialed in a modern jazz tone that I've received many compliments from the people in the church that I play for. Its crazy how I can get close to a P bass or a jazz bass but still maintain a modern feel. The Bartolini's are very responsive and extremely versatile. I'm playing through a MB Mini CMD stacked with the New York 121 set flat and the tone is very articulate, just wonderful.
Neck: The asymmetrical neck pretty much plays itself.
Weight: While the MTD is lighter than my Fender Jazzes, my side started to hurt while playing after about a week but the pain went away about 2 weeks later. Pretty odd.
The one thing I hate about buying used guitars are that sometimes the strings sound and feel good but they're hard to identify without silk wrapping or anything. The strings have a greyish tint to them whereas nickels and SS usually have a silver-ish shine to them. I'm thinking maybe Dean Markley's maybe?
I'll post better pics later but my phone can take some of the best pictures one day and then turn into an old Polaroid camera on others.
I do feel good knowing that I'm only a step away from the custom $4000 + models which is way out of my price range so I'm back to saving my money again.
