My P bass took a 3 foot fall onto my garage floor at a recent practice session, flat on it's back, more or less.
The E string was a little flat, but it's a D tuner that has less tension than the stock ones.

Stuff happens.
Agreed with the above re: not worrying too much about it.
That said, get yourself a folding stand, or, if the cab in the space has a furry covering, you might want to get one of those velcro stick-on holders. Mine have proved quite valuable.
When I use them.

Dented basses are played basses.

To me, a cosmetically perfect instrument is sad....

Ouch!

I'd be really upset if I dropped my new Jazz... the bass is brand new and I'm afraid to scratch it poor jazz, sees more the inside of the case than daylight...

Sorry to hear that.

I always use a stand when playing at church but I was playing out last night and forgot to bring one. It may only be a Squier P Special, with a few dings that were there when I bought it, but I still didn't feel happy leaning it against the wall when not playing.

The worst thing I've seen like this was when I was playing guitar and the bassist put his Gibson TBird on a stand that wasn't quite set properly. It fell face forward (I can still see it now in slow motion), hit the stage and snapped the headstock off. Every player of stringed instruments went into shock!

I love player wear.

Love it.

On boutique basses, and or new basses, it can be a rough process. The first ding or two never looks great, since it is so lone. Dings on the back of the neck are a drag too.
I used to stress a LOT about these things. However, just try and relax. Don't resist what is indeed inevitable. If it bothers you a lot, get a cheaper bass for shows.

Ultimately, though, you want to be playing your favorite bass.

My strap came undone once, and my '87 Fender Jazz Bass Special hit the floor all at once, bounced, and came to rest on the hard tile floor at my feet. I 'bout had a heart attack! Well, nothing broken on the bass, not a scratch, not a dent, nothing out of line, still in tune. Only a broken end on my cord! How in the world?

I was playing at a Boat Marina and we were on break. A huge gust of wind came across the bay and knocked my $279 OLP MM copy clean off the stand. I still have not gotten over that. So I can feel some of your pain. In another incident my new Geddy Lee Jazz was leaning against the sofa. My grandson ran past it and knocked it over. My fault I know and it hurt too. Still you must go on, and still play it. It does get better with time.

This: Small enough to fit in the front pocket of most gig bags, and very secure.

That's nice. Does it cost as much as my SX Jazz?? Just kidding, That is a nice stand though.

I bought one of these.
It sits in the corner never used.
It really depends on the body shape of the bass. A jazz does not sit very nice in it. I do not trust it at all. I just carry a full size Hercules stand.

I keep one of those in my gig bag, but I like these. Much more stable.

I always bring a Hercules stand with me folded up in it's bag. Sometimes I don't need it but a few rehearsal studios I've been to have some pretty ratty stands, if any at all.

As a guy who gets ribbed by his bandmates for keeping my basses in tip top shape, I empathize with you. But, like a car, the first ding is the hardest to get over.

On the other hand, a bit of wear and tear from use adds character to an instrument. I guess that's why Fender sells the pre-faded jeans version of their basses in the Road Worn Series.

My new Fender American Jazz bass has fallen to the floor twice, but both times the fall has been cushioned by a baby.

Both are fine BTW.

I think the toughest pill to swallow is that it didn't happen from you playing it. I've only bought a handful of basses new. While I always take good care of my basses, I've learned to accept some wears as "battle scars", but I want to know the story behind each one, when and where and how it happened, etc...
