Does anyone know how I use the Korg GA1 tuner?
I use the 1/4" jack input but no response.
Do I need to amp the bass signal before plugging into the Korg tuner?
Thanks

| | | | Volume is on max on bass and directly connected to the Korg.
Korg turns on and I pluck or strum the strings and the Korg has no response.
Thanks

Depending upon where you live, I'm guessing that somebody here on TalkBass would be willing to take a look at, and set up your bass for you. Watching somebody do it will give you the confidence to do it yourself later on. There are a lot of pretty good guys and gals on here...

Thanks | Some tuners have a mic versus line selector. My Korg does. Look for that switch, or play through an amp to get bass sounds to the Korg's internal microphone.

Yes I am a newbie at bass, I do not know many of the basic despite watching YouTube and reading some stuff on the webs.
I bought my Fender bass before my first beginner class. Hopefully I will learn more when I start my lesson this coming weekend.
With the Korg GA 1, there is no line/mic selector switch, it is basically if something is plugged into 1/4 jack, it switches to line in, if unplugged it switches back to internal mic.
I think the passive pickups are not loud enough without an amp for the Korg tuner to "hear" it. I will try to use an audio interface or an amp after new years. Hopefully it will work.
Happy new years.

Korg tuner should work with passive pickups like your bass has as long as the volumes turned up like somebody already mentioned. Happy New Year! |

you can check your tuner in a simple way: turn it on and lay it on your bass, without any cable, then play a note. If the tuner shows no response, it's damaged.
The Korg Tuners work via vibration, too - so you can check for it's not the cable and not the bass.
By the way: your bass is an excellent choice for beginners.
I think, the Jazz Bass is the classic instrument for any beginner, for learning the bass, before you'll find your individual sound etc.
To me, it's the better choice for a beginner than a precision bass.
It's so versatile, you can't make anything wrong with it.
The only mistake you could have made is, not to buy it.
Greetz from germany
PS: my first bass was a Jazz Bass, too...;-)

USA | | | If I were you, I would find one of my friends nearby who is a guitar player, before you start trying to tune that, and have them help with that first tune up. You don't know where it is now and if you start cranking on a string that is already above tune, you'll wind up breaking a string which will cause more problems.
Very nice bass! I used to have a '64 Jazz and wish more than any thing that I had never let it go!

| | | | I want to my Long McQuade and tried a Squier Affinity P Bass and a Squier Jag Bass
The weight is unbelievably light
My Fender 60s Classic Jazz Bass weighs much more than the Squier
I wonder what is the reason for it.

| | | | I see I think the neck on my Fender is mainly the culprit as it is "flamed" figured and neck is heavier than the alder body.
Having denser and more solid body and neck
Is this a good thing?

| | | | Just had my first lesson with instructor for the half hour, did some open string plucking exercises and fret action exercises.. Will learn more note next class...
But darn, after strapping my bass for just 10 minutes, I am feeling sore back and left shoulder..
My bass is just way too heavy, especially the neck/headstock....
The Squier basses are much much much lighter....

My first bass was a MIM Fender Jazz as well. I still have it 10 years later. I sold it to a friend at one point but got it back. I now use the neck from it on a different Fender.
Enjoy it! It will serve you as long as you need it to. Great bass.

The Squier basses are much much much lighter.... | Do yourself a favor and invest in a nice, comfortable 3" wide strap. It'll make a huge difference. Try a Pro Comfort Strapp, or a Mono "Betty" strap if you can find them. They distribute the weight of the bass more evenly. Your shoulder will thank you...
And try to relax when you're playing.

| | | I see, I will look into a strap maybe in the future.
The current strap I have is 2" Fender Monogram strap http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/099-0681-000/
Is a much heavier neck compared to the body normal for bass guitars?
Also is a heavy overall weight bass a good thing?
Thanks.

| | | | I did a weight test for my bass and it weighs around 17 Lbs
I will consider the wider strap for my next purchase
Will my 2" Fender monogram strap work in the meantime?
Thanks

Thanks | 17 pounds? OK, OK, now I am thinking this thread and OP is a spoof.
Good luck with the 17 lb 2012 Fender Jazz Bass. Be careful though, the darn Squires are actually only 2 lbs lighter!!! That $430 price is killer at Musicians Friend. hmm
