Good luck with the 17 lb 2012 Fender Jazz Bass. Be careful though, the darn Squires are actually only 2 lbs lighter!!! That $430 price is killer at Musicians Friend. hmm
Well, if you look at his profile, you'll see he is a drummer - and a bass beginner.
So maybe some of his ideas or questions seem to be naive, but he don't has to be a spoof.

The weight of Fender/Squier basses: they difer from model to model.
Especially in the japanese production.
I played Squier JV Strats that were very light, and some were very heavy, same models.

It just felt like a heavy monster, but my old analog scale is not very accurate, I estimate around 14 to 17 lbs, but definitely on the heavy side.

I will give the 3" wide straps a try and see if it help with the balancing problem. With the heavy neck and bad balance, my left hand have to give much more support and be able to move around on the fingerboard.

Indeed, I am mainly a drummer and pianist, I am a bass absolute beginner, hence pardon my naive questions

I have been playing the bass for 2 weeks now, have had 2 classes

The weight for me is no longer an issue since I mostly play sat down and bought a wide strap Fender bass strap

Also learn to play scales and I am comfortable playing fret 1-14 and using all 4 strings and started to learn to play songs

Bass is easier to learn than I though it would be. What is weird is that I thought I was going to use grand staff C (5 lines notation), I am used to this more since I play piano and I am formally trained as a jazz drummer, but instead, it was tabs.

I am more comfortable with tabs after the second class.

This is my first time experience with stringed instrument, and it is fun and sounds the Jazz Bass sounds funky. I love it.

Anyone have any advice with sweat thumbs "sticking" to the back of a glossy polyurethane neck while moving from a low fret to high fret?
