NBD 1972 Precision

I picked this up today. As far as i can tell it is all original except someone put some non fender tuners on it.

I didn't know I wanted a p bass till this weekend when I tried a Mia precision in gc and realized that was a sound I must have. Looked around, found this. The neck is perfect and the tone and overall solid feel of the instrument is jaw slackening.

My other basses are nice (2 musicmen and a sadowsky) but I think this could be my new favorite!

Does anyone know where I can get period correct tuners?

Looks gorgeous, as far as the tuners, I haven't looked in a while but I've seen quite a few on EBay for the Pre CBS basses, don't see why finding a set for a 72 would be too difficult.

Good luck, oh and put a wanted ad here in the classifieds, you never know someone may just have some sitting around.

Is that the one I saw on Dublin/Pleasanton craigslist? If so, crazy good score at that price.

The only option you have is buying the aforementioned CBS tuners. If you don't care that it says "FENDER" on the tuner, the Allparts TK-0882-001 /GOTOH FB3 is a drop-in replacement.

PM me, I might have an extra set of tuner still that I bought for me 77 P. someone chromed them, but did a horrible job and it's flaking so you could always remove the chrome and have a decent Patina.

I need to look around for them as I've been moving my house around, but I will try to find them.

1977 has different type of tuners the ones he needs are late 1968 to late 1974. Trust me I collect these things for years now.
I got 1971 orig tuners for you, although I have to ship them to you from europe. They are nicely aged I think they would match your bass quite good. Also comes with orig screws. Also got the ferrules for it. Doesn't come cheap but PM me I can provide pics if you like.

And oh by the way lovely condition Precision bass!!! May I ask what you paid for it?

Thanks for all the kind comments and help with the tuners.

I had planned on fitting a set of labella flats but it sounds so good with old rounds I am having second thoughts!

Nice bass!

I have Modulus basses as well as other Fenders and Music Man basses..... by 1974 P will always be one of my favorites.

Sadowskys, Dingwalls, Roscoes, MTD and Benevente have came and gone.... not my '70's P!

Looks very nice! That almost looks like an "A" neck, what's the width at the nut?

Beautiful they are begging for Labella's my favorite strings but I may go with Fender strings for this baby find out what gauge the originals were and get those.

That's definitely not an "A" neck.

And, regarding tuners, yeah...go ahead and spring for some originals. That period tuner ('68-'75) is my favorite and Fender has never reissued this style (AFAIK).

The period correct tuners would be the nickel finished clover style used from 68-76, but these are broken up into two eras because of one tiny detail: from 68 to 71 have no register 'R' and 72-76 have the registered 'R'.
The bottom of the clover shape transitions smoothly to the shaft and has no tuxedo tails like the mid-76 and later chrome tuners.

Really, ebay is your best bet for parts.
