NBD: 1984 Fender JV PJ Bass

Picked this up a while back but hadnt got around to a New Bass Day post.

This Black Beauty has a JV neck plate dating to 1984 and weighs only 8 lb.
All original, large pole pickups and TBX tone control... awesome versatility!

Congrats. Looks like my 1985.

By then, they were calling them Jazz Bass Specials on headstock, brochures, etc.

I had a Jazz Bass Special and it was also great. 84-87 MIJ Fender are all exceptional. However I do prefer the standard Jazz Bass electronics V-V-T with no switch.
The added switch on the Jazz Bass Special seemed useless to me. This PJ Bass works better for me and those who are used to more conventional controls.

Very Nice! I have a slightly earlier "non-export" JV PJ. It also came with the O.S. pole-piece pickups, but with a standard V-V-T circuit. I found the pickups to be plenty strong, but lacking in character a bit, definitely not the classic Fender sound from either pickup.

Yeah, the switch in mine got noisy, so I just had it disconnected when the pickups were replaced (SD Vintage P and Hot Stack J).

I did keep the Fender TBX tone control, and also use one in my Warmoth JJ and PJ.
