Where are you getting this info from, personal experience or directly from Ric ?
I have read others say the opposite of this.

I really wanted to buy this exact same model from Wildwood, but the inconsistent 4003 neck profile info is why I can't bring myself to buy one of these without playing it first.

YMMV, of course.
My '08 had that, and I found the neck a little too thick for me. But my '11 doesn't have it, and the neck is much thinner feeling.

Got any details on that? Pics? Wanna sell it? Shoot me a PM...

I'm a huge Type O fan. Halloween isn't the same without them playing at Toad's Place.

I've never seen this "volute" on a 4003. There used to be a real obvious one on 4001s but I can't feel it when I play one. Must be something about hand size or thumb placement.

Nice bass man I love my MG I got from wildwood a few months ago but the ruby makes me wish I would have waited a couple of months.

Hey woflpack I would just buy one if you don't like it you can at least get your money back or possibly make a profit. People still think they are $2000 with a 2 year wait.

the volute may be one of those things like neck thickness, which changed often over the years. My '84 has something like that, which extends halfway into the first fret. It really doesn't add too much girth while playing, I've found. But its existence has always struck me as a little odd

Oh trust me, some of them definitely have one. The neck gets obviously thicker as it goes under the first fret and up into the headstock.

Congrats on a beautiful New Ric. Anyone know the production numbers on the Ruby Red? How rare are the gorgeous basses?

I don't consider what Rickenbacker does, on occasion, a volute.

Below is a variation on what most luthiers would call a volute.

I heard from somewhere that the ruby has become a standard color. I'll see if i can find where I saw it.

This was on the ric facebook page on a picture of a bunch of ruby 4003s ready to ship.

I would, but don't want the hassle of reselling/shipping.
Thunderbird & Jazz necks work best for me.
There have been a couple smaller/slimmer neck 4003's I've played in years past, but the only detail I can remember is one was a Blue Boy.

Thanks, Now I can relax. I was considering getting one to collect while I play the Frets off my Maple-Glo.

This is a July '73 4001, note that the back surface of the neck is actually pretty flat; the "impression' of a volute is due to the rounded profile of the back of the neck in relation to the flat surface of the back of the headstock which is extended slightly to provide additional strength at the nut, but this doesn't really qualify to be called a volute.
